The sixth edition of the De Proef Brewmasters Collaboration Series is our first blended beer. Legendary brewer, Alan Sprints of Hair of the Dog joins Dirk Naudts at De Proef to create this unique bottle conditioned beer. Flanders Fred is a blend of Flanders-sourced lambic with a collaboratively-brewed version of the famous Hair of the Dog Fred. The result is a deep golden ale topped with a creamy off white head. The nose is complex with notes of lemon, pine, tropical fruits and spice. The palate is rich and layered with toffee, apricot and almond, balanced by some green apple, a hoppy bitterness and barnyard funk. Please enjoy Flanders Fred with food and friends. This beer should pair very well with many cheeses, roasted vegetables and grilled meats. We believe this bottle will continue to evolve beautifully over the next few years, adding a subtle blending of the flavors.

Pours brassy gold, with a fluffy persistant head that leaves lacing all the way down the glass. Aromas of citrus and brett funk dominate, with hints of oak, caramelly sweetness, and hops peeking through as it warms. Tart, effervescent mouthfeel leaves a bit of puckering green apple quality in the corners of the mouth, almost overpowering the malt and hops from the Fred component, but not quite. Finishes surprisingly malty and bitter given the sour into. This is a simply phenomenal blend, and the first beer in this series that has really impressed me. Hopefully I can snag a few more for the cellar before too many people catch on.

Hazy deep golden under a thin foamy white top. Lovely bright aroma of pine and lemon and sour funk and barleywine-esque malts. Smooth and gently sour flavor thats a little lemony, tropical, gentle sourness, gentle apricot and a gentle nutty English malt. Really smooth and damn tasty and too complex for me to break down into words.

Bottle. Opaque amber pour with an off white head. Not getting much aroma wise. Mildly sour, with brett, green apple, biscuit, and malty characteristics. Its definitely not a "traditional" Flanders Red for sure. Kinda of a bastardized Frankensteinish version but still not all together repulsive. Its more a kin to a wreck on the side of the freeway that intrigues you. Average body and mouthfeel.

On tap at Kraftwork. Nice tart aroma with oak and mild tart Flanders red notes. Dark orange-amber with no head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Nice mild sour amber ale with oak and medium bitter notes. Light bitter finish with mild bitter oaky tart after.

Draft at Mekong Restaurant. Poured a kind of ruby orange amber color with a small, wispy head. Aroma was lots of tart cherry character, very light sweetness. Some light stonefruits, cherry character. Funky, light crisp tartness to it.

Sampled on draft at Zenos in State College this beer poured a hazy amber color with a small foamy white head. The aroma was sourish with notes of pineapple and soy sauce. The flavor was sour and chalky with pineapple and soy sauce. Long finish. Medium body. Ok.
