A strong blonde ale of about 8% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.
Previously 8.5% abv.

ALLOVATE's rating

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 17/20
ALLOVATE (3063) - Perth, - NOV 16, 2012
Simple, unassuming label, check, small brown bottle, check, grandish ale that bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel I’ve tried, check. New or just been hidden away from me for many years, this is a celebratory explosion of all the simple things melded to make one smile. It pours with so much life. Cloudy as the yeast goes in; a misty deep orange with the finest of carbonation streaming slowly towards a mountainous bleach white crown. The head is well held and settles a good two inches with half that out the lip of the chalice. Laces wickedly. Piercing, all alerting nose has lots of plump fruit reminiscent of cantaloupe, peach and honeydew with edging herbal elderflower and lavender. Similar biting and gripping ripe and underripe fruit on the palate. Bitter fruit end, vinous and dry with a piney, floral and earthy flow. Beautifully balanced and harmonious with its back drop of clean malts. Firm body made lighter by the effervescence. This is lipsmackingly good stuff. Vinous, hoppy, fruity, refreshing and scarily shielding of that alcohol. A wonderful non Tripel!! (33cL, BBE 04/15, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2017 Slight hoppiness coming out towards the end, making it an atypical tripel - a its very very nice

NiklasT (107) - SWEDEN - NOV 13, 2017
UPDATED: NOV 13, 2017 Golden, slightly amber with medium head. Quite high in carbonation. Taste has a yeasty tone, with dry fruit and spices. Excellent balance with a bitterness at the end. Very, very good!

On tap at Fakin. Golden body, white head. Dry soapy aroma, bit flowery, slightly citric. Quite unique. Slightly soapy taste, herbal and sliightly citric taste, peppery-grapeseed bitterness, soft maltiness. Silky smooth malty background. Very well balanced and quite tasty. Respectable hoppy finish. Excellent.

Hopmaestro (1753) - Örebro, SWEDEN - OCT 20, 2017
Aroma has characteristic Belgian yeast notes but also delivers sweet tangerine, orange and apricots. Light estery as well. Taste brings a pretty deep sweetness with sweet orange and apricot. Herbs and yeasty spices circulates around a bit, before a clean ending with a pleasant bitterness kicks in. Smooth and enjoyable.

OminouSC2 (902) - Mora, SWEDEN - OCT 18, 2017
Golden/orange color, medium sized white head. Aromas of bananas, yeast, oranges, spices, citrus peel and slight hay. Light bitter taste with grass, hops, spices, oranges, yeast and alcohol.
