A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

2015 BJCP Category: 24B Belgian Pale Ale

AROMA: Mild malt aroma; slightly sweet notes and a hint of fruit. Not especially estery. Slight cardboard presence. 6/12

APPEARANCE: Rusty copper hue; very hazy body. Small, off-white foam mostly dissipates. 2/3

FLAVOR: Sweet caramel and honey maltiness with minor toasty flavor underneath. Finishes with a harsh astringency and musty character. Bottle is old and probably heat damaged. There is some orange and banana character from the Belgian yeast as well as peppery phenolics (the good kind). The off-flavors are difficult to overlook, but can be ignored with a discerning palate. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; low carbonation. Smooth texture. Subtle alcohol warmth is pleasant. Leaves a musty/drying aftertaste, though. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: I can tell this is a great brew when fresh. Though flawed, this old bottle is still decent. 6/10

Draught. Hazy golden in color with a whitish head. Garden fruityness, bit of yeasty notes and some ligth spicyness in aroma. Ripe apples and some bready notes later on. Quite dry one though. Sweet fruity, almost tropical vibes in taste, some yeasty spicyness too. Orange peel as well. More bitter notes in finish.

Cloudy dark golden coppery body. Huge lasting white head. Aroma of banana, Belgian yeast, pear, clove, cinamon and other Christmass spicies. Flavours of banana, caramel, Belgian yeast, pear, alcohol fusel. Long fruity yeasty dry bitter finish.

De Ranke’s Pere Noel takes a lighter touch with its Christmas-y spices and tastes quite a bit like a traditional Belgian Ale. That works just fine for me, although it won’t work for everyone. Gold pour with a bit of haze. Yeasty, fruity nose. Flavor follows suit with some touches of spiciness and sourness. Just a bit of hops. I’m a sucker for Belgian Christmas beers and this one was extremely pleasant.
