A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

pours slghtly hazy bright and light golden with a very nice frothy white head, good retention and lacing. spicy and breadied malts, spices - grassy licorice, peppery and very spicy yeast, light to medium hopping - bittering grassy-resinous hops, warming alcohol. lively and soft carbonation, light to medium body - oily, nice citrusy-grassy-spicy finish. nice offering.

De Ranke’s Pere Noel takes a lighter touch with its Christmas-y spices and tastes quite a bit like a traditional Belgian Ale. That works just fine for me, although it won’t work for everyone. Gold pour with a bit of haze. Yeasty, fruity nose. Flavor follows suit with some touches of spiciness and sourness. Just a bit of hops. I’m a sucker for Belgian Christmas beers and this one was extremely pleasant.

Pours from bottle cloudy peach coloured with minimal foam head. Basement aromas with a hint of resin. Taste medium bitter, lightly sour. Palate medium body, sticky texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. Doesn’t appeal to me at all. And I love tart beers and sours. So can’t understand the rave from so many about this one. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Aroma is dusty, clove, banana, dry, barnyard, fruity but mostly dusty. Appearance is amber, hazy, light light brown head. Taste is bitter, dry, really really dusty, booze, not fruity, little yeast, incredibly bitter. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light crisp carbonation, incredibly dry and bitter aftertaste. Overall, not what I expected at all, harsh but decent. Certainly not as smooth as Orval.

Bottle: yellow sparkling colour, with a big creamy head. Aroma is dominated of sweet maltynes, citric, belgian yeastynes, fruits. Flavor had a werry nice mouthfeeling of dry bitternes, mixed with sweet maltynes, caramelly, fruity and citrus like a orange. Medium body , nice fruity belgian yeasty finish.

A tasty and sweet beer with hints of christmas spices such as korriander. The drawback is hat it’s pretty bland compared to other christmas styled beers.

Pours a very cloudy copper with fluffy, off-white head. Yeasty, bready, slightly vinous nose with some fresh gooseberries and just a hint of piney hops, becoming fruitier with mango puré after a while. Medium bodied palate, rather fresh. Medium finish with low bitterness.
