Something of a classic, the only Belgian beer calling itself Alt to my knowing, but very Belgian and in that sense not really an Altbier. Pale beige, dense, moussy, sticky head with excellent retention, deep bronze colour with ruby hue, misty. Aroma was already oxidized, but this did not disturb the estery and malty odours, caramel, leather, raisins, hazelnuts, cooked rice, cloves, flowers, pear, liquorice. Deep malty taste, chocolatey, bready, sweetish but not sugary, dried fruits and nuts, dry hoppy finish with some warming alcohol. An underestimated brew with lots of personality.

Bottle Den Haag. Poured a murky dark brown with a thin frothy white head and broken lace. The aroma is big yeast. The flavour is medium bitter with a dry boozy alcohol palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle at home, 330 ml, as Vleteren Dark Old Srong Ale, I guess is this one. Into a tulp, ABV 8% Dark brown red colour on a clear body. Two fingers of tan head, thick but froathy at the same time, with average retention, leaving light lacing on the glass. Aromas of caramel mostly and weak dark fruits, plums. Taste follows, plenty of caramel, malts, some dark fruits with mostly plums, iron, sweet at first with mildly bitter aftertaste. Medium body, good carbonation. Overall a good belgian ale, it doesnt reinvnt the wheel but which does anyway, very drinkable.
