Bottle. Dark brown pour with mocha head. Smell is sweet toffee, chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is earthy, a tad mineral, chocolate, roast, dusty. A bit odd. Medium mouthfeel. Just ok.
October 24th, 2014 - Deep Ellum’s Double Brown Stout is a welcome craft beer here in College Station, where macro lagers are still in fashion. But change is in the wind, and part of the smell is chocolate. Milk chocolate to be precise, wafting from this deep, dark brew. With a clotted heat of auburn foam, this beer looks chewy, but the body (and in disagreement with other Ratebeer reviewers here) is on the thinner side. The light carbonation and thin body allow a single dominant note of malt and chocolate malt balls to express with clarity, but it is not a deep, dark, sullen beer, but a quick hit of chocolate, single and simple. My overall impression is that this is a *fine* beer, made tastier by being in something of a craft beer desert, but that it doesn’t quite reach the complexity that a stout can achieve. Temple, Txl - Spec’s Liquors - 12 oz can - dark reddish brown pour with a tight off-white head. Aroma has some molasses, some port-like notes. Rich, full-bodied flavor with some chocolate notes, a touch of port, some sweet dates, a touch of red wine. Mouthfeel has a nice thick smoothness to it. Very nice Baltic Porter courtesy one of my past Secret Santas. Aroma was nice right out of the can. Milk and dark chocolate with a hint of toffee. Pour was a deep dark brown/near black with a thin tan film for a head. Taste was good. Strong chocolate and burnt caramel flavors with a nice black licorice background. Very complex for a 7% beer. Tap at the source. Pours dark brown, nice tan head. Aroma is nice roasted malts, chocolate. Flavor is similar. Very nutty too. I like it of the style. Solid.

Tap - fair size foamy head, almost black color, much more balanced than I expected, good dark (but not roasty) malt aroma and flavor with a good size kick of citrus hops and the clean finish, really good overall

Pours a very dark brown with a thick khaki head that had some retention but did dissipate somewhat quickly. There was some lacing around the glass but quite minimal. The aroma is dark toasted malts, oats, some woodiness, and alcohol. In the flavor I pick up the dark roasted malts with woodiness to go along with some hop bitterness. There is some oak characteristics in this beer. On the back end I pick up some of the sweeter chocolate and oatmeal flavor as well. Poured from a cool-looking can into a nucleated schooner glass, thanks Greg! Opaque dark brown colour with sudsy beige foam, thin but long-lasting with a little lace. Extremely malt-forward with lots of complex caramelization. Toffee and massive molasses impression, merging with non-descript hoppy balance to produce a perfumey Belgian Dubbel effect. Subtle toasty and roasty notes, but not as much as most stouts, lacking typical dark stone fruit tartness too. Technically a Baltic Porter using lager yeast, thus there were no ale yeast esters or phenols. Grainy with a hint of sharp rye bite and lots of lingering Munich malt stickiness. Complex, but somehow I just don’t dig the whole as much as I expected. In this case, the whole is less than the sum of its parts, a bit of identity crisis going on, not really true to any particular style. Eh, I don’t usually care about that either, but this is just kinda all over the place, like an overly-ambitious homebrewer who never figures out how to bring it all together. Good not great, glad I had a chance to taste it.
