Pours a very dark brown color with cream colored head. Hops, some floral notes, and a bit of roasted malt on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a bit of a hop bite. troyc (2869) - Illinois, USA - APR 16, 2014
[Tap] Very dark brown colored pour with a light brown head. Dark malts, pine sap and light ash in the nose. Taste is more hop forward, with pine being the main flavor note. Chocolate and lighter coffee notes are there as well. Decently balanced, a tad thin in body though. Tasting notes from 2012. Dogbrick (13010) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - FEB 15, 2013
Sample at Hay Merchant in Houston. Pours a deep brown-black color with a medium light beige head that diminishes slowly. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of piney hops, bready malt and a bit of chocolate. The finish is sweet malt up front with a short hoppy aftertaste. Decent overall. djd07 (14471) - Houston, Texas, USA - JAN 24, 2013
On tap at Hay Merchant. Pours a black and ruby hue with small beige head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is roasted malt and pine. Medium mouthfeel with a dry hop and raisin malt with lingering dry finish. A very good black IPA from Deep Ellum. bleeng (1682) - Seattle still not near Beersel., Washington, USA - JAN 16, 2013
Draft at Flying Saucer Garland Tx. Black with a nice small leggy tan head. Nose is slight chocolate malt. Taste is bitter with some faint burnt malt and a noticeable alcohol kick. A little thin. A bit of a mixed up beer - give me an ipa or a nice winter Belgian ale but not this.

Rhanks to JRorie for a sample from his growler. Lots of red in the dark brown. Fruit and roasted notes abound. Brown sugar, bitterness, citrus, and rich malts. Nicely done. Tejas (1006) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JAN 1, 2013
I had this last year at Union Bear and liked it. I had it again this year at Gingerman and liked it even more. Lots of interesting fruity flavors at first then a solid hoppy finish. I think black IPAs are a dumb idea but I like this. This is Deep Ellum’s best beer, imo. tbsb (17) - san marcos, Texas, USA - DEC 30, 2012

Near black pour with a nice lasting beige head. Aroma is piney hops with subtle coffee and smoke. Taste is pine, tobacco, grapefruit, coffee, and a little spicy. Nice bitterness. kidmartinek (4999) - austin, Texas, USA - DEC 20, 2012
Yum. Leathery chalky malty minerally. Deep brown. Thin off white head. Mainly tastes like limestone dust doused with raoasty barley water, in a good way. Yeah!
