Gentle and warming, this rich mahogony ale is filled with moments of fig and raisin. Brewed with an international blend of barlies, thid brew is warming and complex without being over spiced or over powering. Enjoy before its gone.

Leighton (21255) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 3, 2010
Tap at Blind Tiger. A lot of unrealized potential here. Poured jet black with no head. None. Decently rich aroma of dark fruits and malts and holiday spices. Flavor was sweet and rife with figs and raisins. Some licorice in there too. Medium in body with a syrupy mouthfeel. Almost no carbonation. Somewhat sticky on the finish with a pleasant, sweet aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours reddish amber with tan head. Nose and taste of caramel sauce, toffee candy, mashed up figs, dark chocolate, nuts and spicy earth malt. Medium body.

BeerandBlues2 (13322) - Escondido, California, USA - JAN 2, 2014
Bottle at home. Pours clear garnet with a medium, rocky beige head, medium-long retention with good lacing. Aroma is figs, plum, and cherries with toast and nutty malt, light vinous and oak notes, some acetic notes with nutmeg and grassy hops. Flavor is lightly tart cherries and plums, vinous and port notes, light nutmeg, toast and nutty malt with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Any first impressions?
-Headless blackness fails to produce saliva or oesophagus spasms.
-The nose reeks of soy sauce and buried herbs, which would have probably worked better for a marinade.
-Roasted maltiness can be found within the overwhelming soy sauce character.
-Body is thin and flat; the cask might be the culprit here.

What if you dig deeper?
-Piney, anisey herb and spice sweetness clashes with the soy mess.
-Tastes like an ambitious beer which has gone horribly wrong; hard to finish the glass, this cannot be what was intended.

On cask at The Brazen Head, Brooklyn.

Bottle. Blak pour with some tan lacing. Dark fruit and some sweetness in aroma, hints of spice tones. Flavor doesn’t follow, some cardboard malt and hints of fruit and spice. Too much age?

ben4321 (6506) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - DEC 9, 2010
Location: 750 ml bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 12/9/10

Aroma: The nose has some brown sugar, dark red fruits, a little orange, and holiday spices
Appearance: Pours a dark reddish-brown with a half finger of fluffy beige head and some lace
Flavor: The flavor is like the nose, it had lots of spicy and dark malt flavors
Palate: A medium bodied brew with slight warming feeling and fairly soft carbonation
Overall Impression: This is a decent winter beer. It has a good amount of spice to it, and it’s kind of warm on the mouth, surprisingly so for a beer that’s only 7.5%. Anyway, decent stuff.

(Cask at Brazen Head) Black with no head. Lifeless body with soya sauce and spices, a bit sweet and syrupy, some red meat blood! Annoying soy sauce in the finish. Bad. Defiant is not strong enough of a word, this is Insolent.

sonnycheeba (5988) - Federal Hill, Baltimore, Maryland, USA - JAN 2, 2014
Bottle shared by beerandblues2. Pours murky brown/copper with thick, creamy off-head. Aroma is cookie and toasted malts, mixed berries, light caramel, some spice, and faint vanilla. Flavor is dry toasted malts forward, light cookie, dark fruit esters, and dry spices and light woody bitterness towards the finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Rciesla (5499) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - MAR 4, 2010
Draft. Pours a golden body with a white head. Sweet fruity esters, figs, pears, and some light tangerine notes. A bit sweet with a hint of pixy stick sugar an a mild citrus warming. A nice ale.

LilBeerDoctor (3930) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 26, 2008
On tap at Blind Tiger. Pours a cloudy caramel brown with a tan head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar. Flavor of sweet oatmeal, brown sugar, with some sourness in the finish. Kind of odd tasting. This is ok but I don’t think I’d get it again.
