COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Colour and sight: Dark brown-red. A compact white-yellow, stable and lacing head. Scent: Touches of caramel, mocha and chocolate. Spices such as liquorice and coriander are also present. Flavour: Initially, a very good mouthfeel of alcohol and softness. This is followed by an increasing bitterness, partially from the hop, but also from the roasted malt and chocolate malt. Towards the end a nice balance between bitterness, sour and sweet.

Bougie thing to quaff this bougie beer from my bougie pink elephant. But I do love the glass, and the beer, it ain’t bad either, even if it is a mood brew.

STYLE: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

ABV: 8.5%

LOOK: Dark mirror. The only light in the house that’s on is the one in the dining room, that and my laptop. There’s a nice reflection from my most-stolen-in-America tulip, with credit to this dark, dark brew. Beachy thin head with a light caramel tinge. Subtle carbonation.

NOSE: Roasted raisins, molasses, sugar cookies, apple cider vinegar.

MOUTH: A recent trip to Napa clued me in to a wine secret. That some of the better wines are better enjoyed after opening up in a decanter – for up to 24 hours. I’ve done the hour-before-guests come thing, but a day, that seemed overkill. Until I tried it. It’s the same principle for some of the better Belgians, including this one. Honey, malted chocolates, plums, dried cranberries. There’s more here, obviously, but that’s not the point. Somewhere the sweet yeasts are hiding, maybe with the tucked-away ABV, and notwithstanding the complex flavor profile and top-class warming mouth, I need a touch more tartness for balance.

Flaske. Brunravfarvet klar med et stort skumhoved. Duft af gær alkohol og metallisk. Smagen er belgiskbrownmed en del sukker. Ikke noget særligt.

There’s a lot going on in this beer; so much so that it’s not something I’d advise indulging in frequently. With that being said, it is among the most pleasant beers I’ve ever had the pleasure of sipping and enjoying slowly. Very dark roasted flavors are well balanced with the sweetness and background booziness.

Excellent belgian strong ale. Pours dark brown with a quickly disappearing head. Yeasty grassy aroma with a lot of belgian yeast, good aroma though. Taste is dark malt/roasted coffee/ dark chocolate. Finish is nice, with a lingering aftertaste. Excellent. Tried this up against Rochefort 10 and Chimay blue on the same night, this was second best (1. Roch 10, 2. Nocturnum 3. Chimay Blue, but all in my opinion excellent).

The taste quickly disappears. Lots of bubbles. A bit bitter. However I loved the aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle 33cl. poured into a tumbler. Clear deep amber, tall soapy beige head, settles quickly, heavy lacing; aroma roasted malts, molasses, brown sugar, ripe dark fruits, spices; taste light heavy sweet and light bitter, light sourish touch, roasted malts, fruity, toffee, spicy notes; sweetbitter aftertaste, caramel, treacle, warming alcohol; medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation; to my surprise not bad at all.

Pours a ruby black with a lot of slowly dissipating beige head. Very slowly dissipating. Banana spice in the nose. Lots going on here. Some banana bread, some raisin, malty and sweet but balanced nicely. Very good.

For a non abbey Quad, it’s fantastic got the edge on Gulden Draak. I prefer this to Orval even, (heathen). Heady whiskey, brown bread, dates, Christmas pudding of a beer. But not clawing or sickly sweet. Mouthfeel is not as great as say Pannepot Fisherman’s Ale, it’s still complex and brandy warming.

Restrained aroma in a deep red brown pour. Complex yet subtle mix of grain and fruit make this a deliciously different brew (from the usual IPA at least).
