Murky brown body. Cognac, brown bread, wood and brown sugar. Classic and ’artisanal’ taste. Bit rough, but characterful start, ends simpler. Good brew. (33cl bottle from De Lambiek) Alengrin (5376) - BELGIUM - SEP 4, 2015
Bottle from Bezoekerscentrum De Lambiek - and strangely, the ABV has been changed from 5.2% to 7% in handwriting... Very thick but eventually ’stabilizing’, thickly lacing, yellowish cream white, very stable and closed head over a clear dark bronze beer with bright ruby hue, becoming more and more muddy with deposit. Aroma of hazelnuts and roasted pine nuts, freshly cut nettles, overripe peach, medlar, black tea, ripe banana, caramel, dried orange peel, coriander, lots of candied dates, brown bread, diluted coffee grounds, very old cocoa powder, liquorice candy, straw, baker’s yeast, old toast, hint of stale and very old ’herbs de Provence’, dry earth, old cardboard - apparently I am using the word ’old’ all too often, this bottle is probably not very fresh. Fruity onset of brambleberries, some red apple and blue plums, softly carbonated, smooth, gentle with a sourish edge (dried orange peel), moving into a very soft, powdery middle phase, very yeasty with continuing fruity and spicy notes, caramelly, sweet with chocolatey and very nutty accents, becoming increasingly ’corianderish’ towards the end, with lingering juicy caramel malts, bittersweet and resinous coriander domination and some leafy, spicy, ’deep’ hop bitterness; there is some warming alcohol, but nothing obnoxious; a dark candi sugar sweetishness remains as well, but efficiently balanced by the drying effects of the coriander and the hops. Toasted and nutty, even blandly, coffeeish roastedly bittering maltiness prevail. Not unpleasant, but too old a bottle, the yeast lends it a (too) powdery mouthfeel and the coriander is being abused - once again. Starts off as a classic Belgian dubbel, but turns a bit edgy - even lightly astringent - when the (admittedly) soft roasted bitterness comes in, so this beer does show character, all things considered, but it stays ’overcoriandered’. ASPETTO: marrone mogano scuro, abbastanza limpido.
Pour dark brown , good head.
Smell is bit sweet, herbal , some spices, earth , chocolate undertone .
Taste is bit bitter, chocolaty, cacao , bit spices, gentle , some copper-earthyness . waaw, very nice and so far rather unique ! Balanced , and very elegant , as is typical for Belgian beers . High but good carbo . Dry cacao / chocolate malts finish which is amazing . Lovely beer , low in alcohol . suedehead288 (426) - BELGIUM - OCT 10, 2014

Gewoon een lekker donker biertje. Niets baanbrekends, maar stelt zeker niet teleur. PriorL (3068) - Gent, BELGIUM - JUN 12, 2013
UPDATED: JUL 2, 2013 33cl bottle.
APPEARANCE: dark brown beer, small unstable brownish head.
NOSE: caramel, burned malts, some chocolate, raisins, molasses.
TASTE: somewhat spicy, caramel, watery, some coffee in aftertaste. Wouldn’t say this is a bad beer, especially for being only 5,2%, but I’ll never drink this again probably
Thx Mathieu87 for these! suprchunk (2994) - Crestview, Florida, USA - MAY 15, 2013
Effervescent brown colored pour. No head, no lacing, but a constant stream of bubbles. Musty malt aroma. Not much else. Earthy malt flavor, with a soda kind of taste. Dry with a slight sour twang. Okay, I guess.
