This beer just needs one word - BACON. Rauchbiers are originally from Southern Bavaria where the Malster smokes the malt over Beachwood. It is smoky and woody up front and finishes clean just like a good lager should.

On tap at the brewery Sept 9, 2013. Pours a light copper color. Big liquid smoke aroma. Significant carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of liquid smoke, roasted malts, sweet malts, smoked malts. Overall strong on the liquid smoke, even from a Schlenkerla lover!

Pint at the brewery. Pours sparkling gold, perhaps a shade darker than that. The aroma is clean and crisp. Good lager character, crackery with dough. The smoke that is here is very nice; I want more of it. The meaty smoke is more of an afterthought on this beer. Pretty tasty. Needs more smoke.

Had this at the 2012 Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado. Awesome smoke/bacon scents, big bold smokey flavor.

Tap. Pours clear amber with thin, fizzy white head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is caramel and biscuit malt, bacon, floral hops, pine, pears, apples, and smoke. Flavor is sweet malt forward with strong smoke, hops (light bitterness), and light fruit esters; dry finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.

UPDATED: JUN 28, 2012 Clear light copper/rusty gold hue with a masculine pleasing aroma of bacon grease. Flavor is complex and keen. The start is kinda bacon-y and smoky, but it quickly gets this earthy blonde cereal grain tone with toasted biscuit. With an aftertaste of light bacon and light biscuit.

Light, malty rauchbier. fresh and a little sweet. Draft at Denver beer - very nice -a good western smoked beer. Aroma gets very nice as it warms.

Tap @ brewery. I believe this is different than the smoked lager, but I could be wrong. Clear, golden orange appearance with an off white head. Light meaty smoky, caramel, earthy, grassy aroma that is fairly mild. Tasty, pork meaty, smoky, chewy, caramel malty, a bit earthy flavor. Tastes great but the aroma is pretty mild.

Tap @ brewery. Dark golden appearance with an off white head. Mild smoky, slight bbq/bacon, toasty malty nose that’s not that assertive. Moderate smoked woody, bacon, toasty malty flavor with a slightly burnt, bitter finish. The aroma is a little passive.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2013 draft. has a small bit of cigarette ash at first but develops more of a smoked ham, toffee and honey-tinged toast character. after drinking this and the doppelbock I suspect this brewery is capable of making some pretty good lagers. Colorado’s hard water helps them, no doubt, while it makes more of their ales come across as too fruity / minerally / fizzy / sweet. this one, well the smoke is delectable, the malt is clean, the body is snappy and fresh. they did well here. a tasty little smoked meat and clean and bright honey malt showcase.
