With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. Its prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Color is black, some red when held to the light, with a thin light brown head that dissipated quick. Mild, sweet aroma. Has the chocolate and coffee notes youd expect with a smooth, full mouthfeel. Overall, a very good example of the style.

Bottle @ GBBF09. Thick lasting head & black with red hues beer. Chocolaty, coffee, smooth & creamy. A nice session porter.

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2009 Bottle from package store in Billings, MT. Poured black color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate chocolate and roasted coffee aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium sweet creamy chocolate coffee flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable brew that I would recommend to a freind.

Bottle at GBBF 09. Black, bitter, carbonated (which is a really shame; why not bottle condition it and give it some life). Bit of liquorish and mellow pepper. Bit of soot and hint of sourness. Nice but the dead carbonation kills it a bit.

A very tasty porter. Lots of delicious roastiness here makes for a great session ale.

Appearance: Pours a jet brown with a rather large, dense fluffy head. Aroma: Chocolate malts, a little bit of roastiness and a wee bit of earthy hop note. Taste: Bread crusty malt, a little bit of chocolate, some roasty toasty malt, and very mild amount of bitter hops found in the finish. Mouthfeel: Full bodied, and the head gives it almost a creamy texture. Overall: A very solid porter. Great aroma taste and mouthfeel, Id love to try this even fresher, on tap if possible.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a small redish glare and thin and tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate and roasted malt. Subdued sweetness, light burned malt - but only a hint, dark chocolate and a nice bitterness to just break the malt flavours. Smooth and roasted dark malt flavoured finish. Lingering smooth flavoured and mouthfeel.

Very nice beer thats sugary and sweet malty with lots of toffee and chocolate, but the roast complex is completely absent. No burnt character to it, and I missed the darker flavors. Tastes more like a brown ale than a porter. Decent, but not great beacsue of the lack of complexity.

Tap.. Really nice aroma of roasted malts... Had a big head on it, that lasted almost to the bottom of the glass. Flavor was what a great porter should be. Medium light mouthfeel, malty but roasty at the same time. This really surprised me.

Solid nines all round for this baby. Seriously dark colour, almost no head, and an inviting melange of chocolate/coffee/malts to please your sniffer. Taste was much the same, and pretty damned good it was! Mouthfeel was as it should be, neither thin nor thick, and a pleasant aftertaste to boot.
