With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

On tap at the Alibi Room - pours jet black with a thick off-white head. Flavour is chocolate, coffee and malts.

Sampled at Durham WBF - I really enjoyed this Porter - it poured a nice dark reddish black with a thin head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, coffee and nuts - perfect combination of chocolate coffee and malts make the taste on this porter stand out among the many I tried at World Beer Festival - now if they would just start distributing Deschutes in the NC area I would be a happy man.

pours dark, smells rich, and you can taste chocolate. I love this beer, and I bought it on special, so add some points for that.

Taste is caramel and plum with a touch of smokiness. Has a smooth but short finish with a mouth feel that is pretty good, but thinner than expected. Solid beer, drinkable and enjoyable though it is lacking in complexity.

12 oz. bottle from Liquor Mart in Boulder, CO. Dark brown, almost black, pour with an off-white head. Wonderful chocolate, roasted malt aroma. Rich, full-bodied, and quite incredible for a beer of this ABV. One of the best porters I have had.

12 oz bottle - I’ve had this many times, but just now realized that I’ve never rated it. Pours a clear deep chocolate brown with medium sized light tan head. Aroma is full of roasty grains, notes of chocolate and light coffee, hint of vanilla bean and caramelized sugar. Flavor has toasted grain, hint of roasted malt, light coffee, and raisens. Finish is nicely balanced. Always a great porter.

The perfect Porter...12oz. Bottle. pours black as coffee. minimal head... lightly sour with coffee, roasty, barnyard and earthy flavors. If I didn’t know any better...i’d say this was a starbucks with alcohol; it’s that good. My favorite from Deschutes...

Fratto (2845) - Arlington, Texas, USA - SEP 17, 2009
On tap at the Gingerman in Fort Worth. Extremely dark, almost opaque. Rich, smooth flavor.

Rune (12814) - Tromsø, NORWAY - SEP 13, 2009
355ml bottled beer from the USA bar, GBBF 09. Nice beige, bubbly, dense head. Deep rosewood body. Malt and vanilla sweetness to the nose. Chocolate and coffee malts, cherries, and notes of bitter fruits to the ending. Medium bodied. Fine drinkability (Earls court, hotel room, 06.08.2009).

KyotoLefty (10265) - Kyoto, JAPAN - SEP 13, 2009
Draught at Deschutes Brewery and Public House in Portland. Smokey, big chocolate aroma with coffee; fragrant and rich. Light and crisp body, big flavorful malt. Lots of chocolate and café ole flavors as well. A pretty great porter.
