COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

12oz bottle-pours a rich light brown head and black color with red tint. Aroma is ashy, sharpness (acidic?), dark malt-chocolate/cocoa. Taste is rich/sweet dark malt-chocolate/cocoa, ashy/peat, some citrus in background which probably is part of what provides the hops bite. Nicely done northwest porter/black IPA. The aroma had me wondering but JWC215 helped me on that so… Thanks Russ Powell.

Pours black with a white cream top. Smells of dark chocolate malt. Roasted coffee flavor that is followed by a nice light and sweet flavor. Smooth porter.

Dark reddish brown with medium beige head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt coffee and caramel notes. Flavour likewise with a sweet end.

Dark black body with a fluffy head. Plum in the aroma with a lot of sweet malts. It’s a bit thin on the palate and lacking in flavor but coming in with what I felt was plum and chocolate with a hint of roasted woody nuttiness. Not bad by any means, but not very remarkable.

UPDATED: OCT 18, 2008 A very nice porter. Pours dark, dark brown with the slightest viscosity. Fair head with good lacing all the way down. Very pleasant complex aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate, molasses, caramel and a wee hint of wood. Good full flavor with the right amount of hops. Very drinkable; one of my favorites.

12oz bottle thanks to MaltOMeal. Best by 10/17/08. Pours surprisingly light colored for a porter. Though it appears black in the glass, close inspection during the pour shows a brownish red, dark Brown Ale color more than what I would associate with the traditional porter color. Anyways, has a nice off-white head with very good lacing. Aroma is a nice creamy chocolate, classic porter aroma. Some maltiness and biscuit-type smells are present as well. Seems like a mix between a porter and a brown ale and I don’t mean that as a bad thing. Flavor is chalky, mild chocolate, mild in general. Medium to light bodied. This seems like a session beer. Very, very drinkable, could drink this endlessly. While this is a nice session porter I don’t think it can hold up to some of the bolder examples in the style (like Edmund Fitzgerald).

12oz bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a tan head. Nose is of roast malt and smoke and some nuttiness. Taste is of roast malt and ash. Mouthfeel is medium-to-thin with some carbonation. A great example of a porter.

Bottled, bought in Wal-Mart in Aberdeen, Washington. Clear brown color, short off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt, some coffee, hint of chocolat, some blackcurrant. Quite bitter taste, fruity chocolat, burned sugar. Some rum maybe indeed.

Veyr good, a nice gassy porter, and nice chocolate features. It was a nice one in until the end.
