COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. Its prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Pours black with a tan head. Aroma and flavor are both heavy on roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Not overly aggressive, however.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2008 Dark and roasty, but light bodied enough to be a session beer for those of us with cojones. Pours a beautiful, warm brown and carries you away with a well balanced array of coffee and chocolate flavors. My personal favorite beer of all time, and very affordable as well!

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2009 This is my light daily drinking beer. Great chilled in the summer and served warm in the winter. Dark amber. consistent thick head. Just a hint sweet malt, coffee, chocolate. well balanced, and slightly lacking a boldness of flavor that makes it an easy choice for almost any occasion. leaves no aggressive bitter aftertaste. I usually keep this on hand.

I thought this was just a little heavy on the black patent malt. A tad too roasty for me, but a good porter nonetheless.

This is a darn good porter, pours black/red, nice tan head, smoky chocolate/coffee taste... with a bit of a woodsy aftertaste, will buy again, good stuff! Cheers!

Pours black with a tan head. Very heavy carbonation. Aroma is of malt, caramel, and dark fruit. Creamy mouthfeel. Doesn’t taste much like a porter. It’s very sweet with hints of fruit and caramel malts. Lingering taste of weak coffee. Very drinkable, and worth drinking again.

Great smoky and chocolate taste. By fare and away one of the best beers from Deshutes, and best porter for the price. Only a moderate ABV, but full bodied and substantial.

Soft chocolate and rated malt nose. Molasses color with a slight orange hint when held up to a light, creamy tan head. honey roasted chocolate toast sweetness, balanced by some smoky bitterness. Full carbonation, medium body, with a slight smoky chocolate finish. Really fine Porter, rich and full of flavor, but has a real easy drinking quality to it.

12oz bottle-pours a rich light brown head and black color with red tint. Aroma is ashy, sharpness (acidic?), dark malt-chocolate/cocoa. Taste is rich/sweet dark malt-chocolate/cocoa, ashy/peat, some citrus in background which probably is part of what provides the hops bite. Nicely done northwest porter/black IPA. The aroma had me wondering but JWC215 helped me on that so… Thanks Russ Powell.
