With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

Pours up brown with a frothy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted coffee. Taste is bittersweet, with notes of chocolate, and coffee. Light fruity undertones, but the chocolate stays dominant. Body stays to the lighter side of medium. Good.

From bottle. Aroma was chocolate and booze and a little metallic. Pours with modest fast dissipating head. Tastes of rich chocolate, roast, and a little warming booze, also a tiny hint of perfume which was nice. Drinks very very dry and rich

I had this beer at craft beer and it was amazing. It pours a coffee black with a tan head. Chocolate aroma, slight hop bitterness with a creamy taste in your mouth. I highly recommend this beer.

12 oz bottle pours a cloudy black -- showing a dark cola coloration at the corners when held to the light -- with a patchy tan head. The aroma is first of dark roast malt, with a leathery dark chocolate smell and anise and dried fruit notes coming after. The taste follows the aroma with a sweet creamy texture like a milk stout; the body is on the lighter side, but not watery. The finish has the leathery dark chocolate notes in a drawn out mildly bitter finish that is neither dry or sticky. The A thin head lingers and there is minimal lacing. This is a pretty solid porter, not extravagant or flashy, but amazing in a composed, reserved manner.

19.04.2014, 0,35l bottle @ Monk’s American Bar:
Nice creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet roasted, puffed rice, roasted grain, dark sugar, roasted coffee, chocolate, caramel, hay, grass, lactose. Taste is slightly sweet watery, roasted grain, hay, cardboard, puffed rice, coffee, grass, sugar, caramel. Medium bitterness, slightly dry watery mouthfeel. Meh! Expected a lot more from this one...

Chocolatey aroma is dominant, pours a dark colour with creamy head. Smooth creamy mouthfeel for sure! Flavours of chocolate and malt are prominent. Would love a glass of this porter some evening in the dead of winter! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Right from the first sip you could taste the chocolate. Though there is a slight bitterness the chocolate comes through perfectly. Has a rich dark colour. It’s definitely a beer I would have again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown beer with a medium foamy tan head. Nose of cola, cocoa, and candied nuts. Flavor is fairly rich with semi-sweet chocolate, light coffee, and vanilla finished with a chalky bitterness that lingers pleasantly. With a slightly creamy mouth feel, this is a solid, mild porter.

12floz bottle, $1.50 unit price, BBD: 11.04.2017, mug glass. Presents itself blackish-brown in color and a one-finger, big bubbles head. The smell isn’t very impressive, charcoal with hint of toffee. Tastes better though, moderately roasty and dark chocolate comes through just a tad. Palate is mostly dry, but velvety textures ripple through every now and then. In short, a decent basic American porter and nothing more.
