COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
With a dark beer as our first and flagship brand, Black Butte defined Deschutes as a radical player. A slight hop bitterness up front enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish. It’s prized for its creamy mouthfeel and intense complex flavors.

An excellent project tree. Mine was a little too cold so couldn't really experience it's delicious flavors till it was too late. But enjoyed none the less. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

It pours black with a light brown head. It has aromas of roast and chocolate. The flavors add sweet fruity esters like cherries. Bitterness is low.

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2017 Bottle in San Carlos from a store whose name I don’t recall. Pitch black with tan head. Very faint aroma of cola, roasted malt, coffee. Tastes of cola and roasted barley, with some light coffee and chocolate notes. I was expecting better based on the rating in ratebeer.

Pours dark brown with a thinner khaki head that leaves some spotty lace. Nose involves milk chocolate, nutty notes, toasted malt, a light hint of smoke, and cherry. Fairly sweet, decently bitter. Lighter to medium bodied, actively carbed, slick feel, with a toasty chocolaty finish. A decent dark session beer, but it’s missing something for me. I’d love some rye-influenced spicy, maybe a more pronounced roasted note.

sm89walt (2062) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - MAY 22, 2017
Bottle - Shady Pines, Sydney. An opaque brown with a small but mostly lasting, somewhat lacing light tan head. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, liquorice, roasted malt, dark and dried fruits, and smoke. The palate echoes the nose with an additional creamy vanilla characters. Medium to full in body, medium carbonation with an oily mouthfeel and a long finish.
