Sample at Denver Rare Beer Tasting VIII on 10/07/2016. The beer is a brown-black color with a medium thin light beige head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing. Malt, chocolate and oak in the nose. Full-bodied with flavors of roasted malt, dark chocolate, oak and a bit of orange. The finish is chocolatey with a malty aftertaste. Poured a deep brown-black with an off-white head. Chocolatey aroma. An odd mix of chocolate and light citrus; age has mellowed a lot of the flavors together.

March 12, 2016 - on tap at Rare Beer Fest held in the Minnesota History Center. Very excited to get a shot at this and was on my top 10 list for the fest, so made sure to get to the Deschutes booth early. It didn’t disappoint. Dark pour with limited head. Poured at Rare Beer Tasting V. Pours black with small beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong roast, dark chocolate, spice, herbs. Thick mouthfeel, strong roasted malt, dark chocolate, light spice, lingering sweetness, very impressive. PartyFowle (954) - - APR 3, 2015
The deepest brown, with a very thin head of light tan that remains as a silky top layer for a while. There were multiple pours among all the people at this tasting, and nobody really got a pour I thought was below par in appearance. Maybe some white chunks, but I wouldn’t think much of it if I bought this off the shelf. Not sure what Deschutes was so worried about. In the nose: tangy dark chocolate, lots of orange, lots of coffee. A hint of vanilla and bourbon in the background, but it’s mostly just tangy chocolate and fruits. The flavor expands on the aroma in the best way. Tons of orange juice, orange peel, orange zest. Dark chocolate here is more bitter and roasty, less tangy. After the swallow, smooth vanilla and oak roll in. Not even a hint of the alcohol. Body is maybe a touch under medium. Gentle, poking carbonation and a good amount of fizz. Very glad I got to try this. It’s not the best-looking beer, but it’s tasty.

Draft at Beveridge Place Pub awhile back. XXII-XXVI vertical. From notes. Finally, the elusive 22. Dark pour, some head, some lacing. Dark fruit, cardboard, old hops, a little tangyin the end. Chocolate; medium+ body, lingering chili-like heat which I interpret as my tongue being tricked by the alcohol "heat." At a vertical event at the Beveridge Place Pub in Seattle. I only went to get a chance to drink this beer, not because I thought I’d like it but just because its rare. Can’t tell its aged. Still fruity yeast and still a perceptible hoppiness. To me this comes off as I fruit and some bitterness. Also, that unsweet chocolate syrup is strong. But its also a big beer with light alcohol and big thick malts but no fortunately no autolysis. F: lighter feel than expected. Just bitter and dark malts. Not interesting. Tap to glass. Dark hue with creamy light brown head than dissipated. Aroma is huge caramel, toffee, molasses, coffee, ethanol. Mouthfeel is great with a full body and crisp carbonation. On tap @ Beveridge Place. Wow. Been looking for this for a while. Supposedly one of only 5 kegs remaining in existence. Described here: "The experimental chocolate that was used in this year’s formulation is coming out of solution and is forming a butter type layer on the surface of the beer. While the beer tastes perfectly fine the visual in the bottle is not up to Deschutes Brewery’s long held commitment to quality and the customer experience." So they returned the beer to the barrels and aged it four more years. According to Deschutes, the additional barrel time helped remove the oily layer from the beer. Pours deep blackish brown with medium oily mocha head that fades quickly. No sign of the visual defect that damned this beer. Aroma is roasty dark chocolate, oaky, boozy, barrel-aged flavors. Taste is similar: dry, oaky, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, heavy barrel notes without much booziness. Very neutral flavor vs. XXIII - XXVI versions tasted at the same time. At a Deschutes tasting at Small Batch Liquors over GABF week ’14. Muddled dark brown looking like when you add hot chocolate to warm water and it doesn’t all mix in. Nose is vanilla, milk chocolate, light sweet bourbon. Taste follows, rich with a lot of milk chocolate. Didn’t get the chiles or orange like I remember from XXIII. On it’s way out.
