XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter’s debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it’s a jazz riff, guided by the brewer’s muse and the lure of exotic ingredients. Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet. But, as it should be, you’ll be the judge of that.

Bomber received in trade. Pours brownish black with a frothy goldenish brown head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet, malty and spicy with roasted malts, dark chocolate, figs, dates, allspice, cloves, wood, dark roast coffee, caramel and sweet dark bread. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter and spicy with roasted malts, sweet dark bread, burnt caramel, fudge, allspice, cloves, coriander seeds, black pepper, moist wood, oatmeal cookies, vanilla fudge, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, brown sugar and hints of dark dried fruits. Mouthfeel is round, spicy astringent and medium bodied. Finish is bitter, malty and spicy with roasted malts, dates, figs, burnt cookies, cloves, allspice, black pepper, moist soil, charred wood and vanilla fudge. What’s up with all those spices. I had hoped for some dried dark fruit goodness but this is almost all spice...

Bomber that Paul brought back. Pours a matted dark black with a generous light mocha head. Great meld of dark chocolate, roasted malt, bit of anise, some nutiness, bit of plum and grape. Moderate carbonation, fairly full bodied, chocolate and dark fruit on the palate, traces of smoke and some alcohol, long tasty finish. Quite enjoyed this one.

Bottle: pours dense chocolate brown, khaki dense ring that persists. Nose is pungent, chocolate nib, fig, raisin, vanilla, musty shoe leather on the nose. Herbal chocolate, roasted malts, and lots of dark fruit overtones on the finish. Boozy heat filters in there. Rich, thick palate adds to the depth of this beer. Well done. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a thick black with no head. Aroma of chocolate bar, roast and some spice. Taste is a twangy hit of spicy ass juice. Pretty good.

[email protected] Black with a beige head. Extremely spicy aroma; nutmeg and coriander in abundance in both aroma and flavour. Chocolate in the flavour with sourish notes. Too much spices.

On tap at The Daily Pint. Opaque black with a thick mocha head and excellent lace. Big rich dark chocolate aromas with roasted coffee, caramel, dark fruits, vanilla, mint and alcohol. Bittersweet dark chocolate flavors accompanied by roasted coffee, figs, molasses. Full body, moderate carbonation, Creamy smooth mouthfeel, warming alcohol, and a bittersweet finish. Very nice.
