On tap @ the brewpub in Bend. Opaque black-brown, with a finely bubbled brown head. Aromas of treacle, vanilla, coffee, and vague dark fruits. It poured a black color with a nice tan head. The aroma was of dark chocolate, sweet cherry notes, a little vanilla, some licorice, toasted marshmallow and roast. The taste was sweet and rich, full bodied, some serious roasted marshmallow and dark bitter chocolate. 650 ml. bottle. Best after date 7/23/13. Pours a medium, well retained, mocha head, with some lacing, over a black (SRM 40) body....nose is coffee, chocolate, plum, Boveril.....taste is strong coffee, light chocolate, plum, fig, raisin, dates, finishing with a sweet bitter coffee bite.....mouth feel thick, chewy, creamy from carbonation, sticky, alcohol adds a light burn. This confection is rich, thick, complex in both aroma and flavor, and young. It is a too sugary sweet (?dates) and needs more time in the bottle to allow the tremendous forces that must have been used to blend and balance. My bad, in that I didn’t see the BAD until after opening, and alas, having to consume. Oh well, need to get another for aging. MOST IMPORTANT POINT IS THAT EVERYONE WHO HAS RATED A BOTTLE OF IT, SO FAR, DID A BEER TOO YOUNG ACCORDING TO THE BREWER. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7

Bottle:   Black, sandy head, large and foamy, nice lacing.   Nose of cocoa, dark chocolate, graham cracker, oak, sherry, and some minor dark pitted fruit.   Smells inviting!   Similar on the on the tongue, albeit the dark pitted fruit and sherry are softer.   The 11% ABV is noticeable.   Its got some heat on it.   Not quite as thick as I was hoping either, body and mouthfeel are moderate.   A little dry on the backside, lingering cocoa, dark chocolate, roasted malts, and alcohol.   As is its rather enjoyable, a little hot right now, but with time should fair better.   Only wished the dark pitted fruit and sherry were a little more pronounced.   Otherwise a very very fine Imperial Porter! jhamp9 (1887) - Corinth, Texas, USA - SEP 10, 2012

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2014 Still too young. Hops very prevalent on the nose and in bitterness in the taste. No doubt this will mellow with some time, but right now it dominates and detracts from the rest. I could pick up the figs, but dates really just show in some sweetness. Great and only going to get better, but can’t hold it’s own against the XXIII in a side by side tasting (yet).
>>>Rerate: Cracked another now that 25 is out. Hops have faded from the nose which is now a complex, deep chocolate/roasted malt/dark fruit/bourbon mix. Taste mostly follows, but the fruits are not as distinctly present as I remember from before. Much more integrated, but leaving rating...can’t push this to a 4. XXIII is just flat out better.
>>>Update. Two years on this now. Rounder, rich. Has come together nicely, but no distinct fruits.
