3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz. bottle, best by date 8/31/12. Aroma of roasty malts and leafy, piney, citric hops, with notes of cocoa, light coffee, grapefruit, spice and earthiness. Opaque brown/black color with a pillowy, lasting, tan head and gobs of lacing. Flavor profile is similarly full of roasted, chocolate malts, showing just a brief hint of dark sweetness before the pungent hops and bitterness arrive, bringing a nice, flowery, herbal component and lasting dryness, blending at the finish along with hints of coffee, earth, wood and faint berry. Creamy and active on the palate, ultimately just dry enough to be considered refreshing, with a medium-full body. Really tasty.
My all-time favorite beer. Very dark pour; almost black. Probably classified as an India Black Ale (IBA) if your into classifying every freakin’ thing. If you were blind-folded, you’d swear it was an IPA. Very refreshing; unusual for such a dark ale. Hints of chocolate and roasted java beans. Love this beverage. If it were a chick, I’d marry it. monk191 (2023) - Portland, Oregon, USA - AUG 30, 2015
A nice dark. Pours a pretty deep black with a tan head. Smells of coffee and vanilla. Taste is coffee all the way, with some vanilla in the finish. Had on tap at Bay Area Brew Fest 2015. jennajlover (135) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 13, 2015
Great black IPA or is it cascadian black ale. Dark pine hop aroma brings out the IPA part. Coffee aroma brings out the dark side. Pours black with tan head. Taste of balanced hops and dark malts. mysticbrew (118) - - MAY 22, 2015

Bottle sampled at Classic City Brew Fest 2015! Pretty standard black IPA with nice roasty malts under piney hop notes. Medium bitterness, good body, mild carbonation. Not too shabby.

Poured into a mason jar style glass on 07.29.14.
A: Citrus and caramel.
A: Midnight black with some red. 1 1/2 finger tan head that retains very well.
T: Grapefruit and caramel dominate. Roastiness and cocoa are subtle.
P: Creamy and crisp. Good carbonation.
O: This is like a hoppy porter. It wasn’t as hoppy as other CDAs, but Deschutes seems to strive more for balance rather than IBU crowns.
