COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ‘Super Jubel’ was discovered by accident two decades ago when a clumsy burglar didn’t realize the weight of his stolen keg of Jubelale. He dropped it outside to freeze in the season’s sub-zero temperatures – only to be discovered the next morning by Gary Fish, Deschutes Brewery owner. More than half the liquid in the keg had frozen and the remaining beer was a very cold, highly concentrated ‘Jubelale on steroids.’ It was so good that the brewers set about recreating it, coming up with an annual ‘Super Jubel’ that is aged in oak barrels. A limited amount has been available on tap every year, 2010 will be only the second time that the brewery has bottled up this brew for sale. The first time it was available by bottle was a special millennium edition in 2000.

Dartagnan's rating

   AROMA 9/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 17/20
Dartagnan (13) - Oregon, USA - APR 19, 2010
The beer is dark brown in color with a light brown head and little retention. It lightly smells of caramel and malt with no heat. It has a rich caramel taste with hints of roasted grains. It has a full body and runs smooth over the palette. You definitely do not taste any alcohol. Dangerous but delicious; definitely an easy drinking beer.

Bottle shared at KyotoLefty’s 10,000th rating celebration. Very rich and smooth dark fruit nose, with prunes and raisins, some alcohol fumes (and they add to the richness), all still fresh and sharp. Dark brown, with a creamy beige head. Flavors of dark fruit and stone fruit, mildly sweet, with a smooth lighlty sweet fruity finish. Rich body, very creamy on the palate. This has matured so well. World-class stuff. We drank this one alongside the 2015 version which, while also very good, didn’t reach these heights of aroma and flavor.

KyotoLefty (10688) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAY 5, 2017
Bottle, side by side with the 2015, shared at my 10K rating celebration. Dry, austere treacle nose, tea, some pine, creamy. Glowing red-brown with lace. flavors of apricot, some banana, pine, resin, caramel, vanilla. Prefect integration on this one--just stellar. Everything has come together perfectly in these 7 years.

Bottle share. Caramel aroma, kind of flat pour, small ring of bubbly head. Taste continues with the caramel, pit fruit, sweet. Kind of sticky.

kyzr (1596) - Montana, USA - DEC 30, 2016
Pours a dark brown with small brownish head. Nose of dried fruit and molasses. Flavor is dried prunes, raisins, and brown sugar. Nice creamy texture with no high alcohol burn to the finish.

Sarlacc83 (2290) - Portland, Oregon, USA - DEC 12, 2016
Bottle A: Mahogany body, cappuccino head, lacing. N: Toffee, raisin, oxidation, burnt brown sugar, mintiness, some caramel, pecan, and minerality. T: Very sweet, but not cloying. The oxidation helps. M: Medium body, no alcohol, crisp carbonation. O: Very nice. Doing pretty well with 6 years of age on it. But I like the 2000 more.

beertholomeus (1814) - California, USA - APR 10, 2015
Pours a dark amber brown color with a khaki head. Oak, bourbon, toffee, caramel, toast, molasses, and dark fruit aroma. Oak, bourbon, vanilla, toffee, toast, tabacco, caramel, molasses, alcohol and dark fruit. On draft at city beer.

Bottle. A vigorous pour begets a one-finger soap bubble head the color of ginger. The liquid’s too dark to see through except when held to the light. Clear and effervescent. Red wine and cola in color. In the nose: vanilla, cola, burnt brown sugar, raisins, and bourbon. Noticeable alcohol heat. Flowery hops. Spicy yeast. In the flavor: Sweet prunes, vanilla, pepper, and caramel. Dr. Pepper! Super hot; you can feel the alcohol heat travel all the way down to the stomach. The slightest hint of roasted malts. Bitterness clings to the back sides of the tongue. Medium body, medium carbonation. Smooth, buttery. Wow.

(bottle - 22 oz - 2010 vintage) Murky copper pour with a thin tan head. Fruity and malty aroma with lots of caramel and still some good alcohol. Lots of different fruits in the flavor with a middle that seems to be a combination of toffee and caramel. Finishes sweet and fruity.

Sat on this for 5 years before cracking it open. Creamy first impression, drinks more like a quadruppel than anything else I can think of.
