COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep, robust and richly rewarding, this is beer to linger over. Obsidian has distinct notes of espresso, chocolate, roasted malt and black barley, with just enough hop bite to cut the sweetness.

Pours black with a tight brown head. Aromas of chocolate and coffee, but floral and citrus hop notes do come thru as well. A hint of sweetness at first, but burnt toast and espresso follow. The astringency works fairly well with the bitter hops. Rich, thick mouthfeel.

Intense dark chocolate, cacao, dark roast filter, dark, charred malts. Hazy, very dark brown, small, creamy, beige head. Medium bitter. More dark chocolate, cacao, burnt malts, dried coffee beans, soft carbonation, full bodied. Beautiful, very punchy. Keg at GABF17, Denver.

From Jul 2006 Poured from 12oz bottle a pitch black with a large off white head of foam that dissipated slowly The smell has a lot sweet roastiness to it with notes of chocolate and coffee. The taste is also very roasty...nice balance between the sweetness from chocolate and coffee flavours and the hop bitterness. Makes for a very tasty yet smooth brew and there's no alcohol presence on the palate at all. Yum! Bottom line: One of my favourite American Stouts out there. I highly recommend it!

Has been the ‘standard’ for more than 20 years imho. Just bitter enough to let you know you’re not sipping a sweet malt bomb. Great on a Fall afternoon.

On nitro at the brewery. Nice feel, but he hops come through significantly more than the roasted malts, which to me is not overly desirable. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz bottle poured into frosted pint glass. One my absolute favorite "mass produced" craft beers. Predictable, well balanced and good to the last drop stouts. Kinda early in the season to begin drinking dark and heavy beers, but I could not resist!

Nice, smooth, velvety, creamy, light to moderately coffee and dusty. Medium body, oily texture, light heavy bitterness. In overall nice, decent and drinkable.

Always pleased to get to try a Deschutes beer for the first time. That is the case here, a single 355 ml bottle picked up in North Dallas and carried home. Poured into my Buffalo Bayou tulip glass it delivers a tuxedo black liquid and a dark tan head that promptly subsides. Taking a smell, dark raisin, baker's chocolate, malt and rock candy. A sip now, dark roast coffee, licorice, malty and hoppy both, a very small touch of sweetness. Finishes with a strong, decent bitterness. I would like to have again if it ever shows up.
