Rating #250 after nearly a year on not rating. Apperarance is total darkness that even bright light does not pentrate. Nose is full of roasty coffee notes and very faint hint of chocolate covered cherries. Medium bodied mouthfeel - just about spot-on for the style IMHO. Flavor is all about the coffee-like biterness - very nice!
Has been the ‘standard’ for more than 20 years imho. Just bitter enough to let you know you’re not sipping a sweet malt bomb. Great on a Fall afternoon. bdleedahl (594) - , Saskatchewan, CANADA - OCT 6, 2017
On nitro at the brewery. Nice feel, but he hops come through significantly more than the roasted malts, which to me is not overly desirable.

12 oz bottle poured into frosted pint glass. One my absolute favorite "mass produced" craft beers. Predictable, well balanced and good to the last drop stouts. Kinda early in the season to begin drinking dark and heavy beers, but I could not resist! BlazerT (1212) - Sosnowiec, POLAND - SEP 7, 2017
Nice, smooth, velvety, creamy, light to moderately coffee and dusty. Medium body, oily texture, light heavy bitterness. In overall nice, decent and drinkable.

Always pleased to get to try a Deschutes beer for the first time. That is the case here, a single 355 ml bottle picked up in North Dallas and carried home. Poured into my Buffalo Bayou tulip glass it delivers a tuxedo black liquid and a dark tan head that promptly subsides. Taking a smell, dark raisin, baker's chocolate, malt and rock candy. A sip now, dark roast coffee, licorice, malty and hoppy both, a very small touch of sweetness. Finishes with a strong, decent bitterness. I would like to have again if it ever shows up. Visual: (cellared for 1 year). Pours ultra dark brown without a head but temporary surfacing bubbles, thin ringed retention, barely visible singular micro streams.

Nose: toffee malt, sweet cocoa, chocolate truffle. (lvl-6)-pungency
Attack: off-dry crisp, roasty malt impression
Mid-palate: background controlled acidity, (lvl-3-sweetness), coffee fruity overtones, medium dry roasted barley malt
Finish: long-lingering medium bitter dry woody roast, roasted exhale
Summary: Lots of lengthy roasted malts with a just enough sweetness and acidity to balance it out. Medium bodied, low creaminess. Smooth drinkability.

It pours black with a tan head. It has moderate coffee aroma. Also hints of chocolate and dark roasted coffee flavors. Spicy elements and slightly burnt notes.
