A Belgian-style abbey ale crafted like those that Trappist monks brew for their own session beer. It is light bodied, light in color and relatively lower in alcohol with spicy phenolics and complex fruity esters of cherries, nectarines, peaches and bubblegum with a characteristic slightly tart and dry finish from the Belgian yeast.

12 oz. canned 09/28/2016. Mostly clear, burnt orange brew with a loose disc of foam. Nose is peach and minty resin with mild notes of banana and clove. Flavors of whole grain toast, banana, clove, honey, citrus zest and dried mint leaf. Almost medium bodied with a medium-high fizz and a light astringency.

A dark golden color with a white head. The aroma contains some lemons, grass, and spices. The flavor is rather crisp and dry but with a touch of sweetness. Lemons and oranges and bready notes are the main flavors. Im not getting the cherries and peaches mentioned in the commercial description. Overall a pretty simple session ale not bad but not complex either.

FROTHINGSLOSH (7796) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 27, 2017
Sampled on draft this beer poured a bright golden-amber color with a medium sized creamy orange-white head that left decent lacing. The aroma was sweet with golden fruits and a bit of yeast. The flavor was sweet, tangy and yeasty with sugar and golden fruits. Long finish. Moderately full bodied. Quite pleasant.

2015 BJCP Category:26C Trappist Single

AROMA: Medium-high Trappist yeast character. Citrusy esters with a clean, flowery or perfume fragrance. Some spicy notes. Some sweet grainy malt background notes. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Dark gold to light orange/copper hue. Cloudy body. Moderate off-white foam laces well. 2/3

FLAVOR: Lightly malty-sweet with honeyed biscuit/cracker flavors. There is a citrusy flavor (mostly orange) throughout. A spicy hoppy presence lingers in the background but becomes quite strong on the finish. Phenols create for a peppery, almost tobacco-like character (possibly tannins) which is strong enough to be a bit distracting. 13/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; medium-high carbonation. Quite crisp with a dry, slightly bitter aftertaste. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Impressive that an American brewery would be able to produce this niche style on a large scale. Pretty much to spec and enjoyable. 7/10

Not much of a Belgian single. Aroma is mainly yeast with a little bit of mold and Spice. Flavor is fairly tart, lots of yeast in a little bit of malt and grain.

badgerben (5171) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - JAN 15, 2017
Gold color with a towering head. Very heavily spiced nose and strong yeast character. Light flavor, a bit like water crackers. Hints of honey and floral hops.

On tap at Pretentious Beer. Clear orange, nice white head. Hearty, bready aroma. Taste is like a sweet bread. You like Hawaiian bread or something like that. Nicely full bodied. Plenty of yeasty flavors as it warms. Pretty tasty.

Drake (13726) - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 15, 2016
12 ounce can from The Malt Shoppe, 9/11/16. Uh oh, some bad signs here. Hazy orange, large foamy head, about 5 fingers before I got half the can emptied. Good retention. Aroma has some chlorine and bandaid. Also some bready malt and citrus. The taste is stone fruit, bready malt. Assertively high carbonation is stripping out most of the flavor. Thin bodied. Something is awry here.

scarletfire65 (1466) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 6, 2016
Draft at Sociale, Chicago. Light notes of Belgian yeast and savory malt. Dusty cellar flavors. Not mush to it.
