Rather like a thick, hoppy porter. Chocolate-heavy nose, green plant aroma, hop oil and hefty malt flavor. It was the best thing on the menu at the time - surprising that it’s rockin’ a sub-3 average...
Draft to pint at the Champaign brewpub. Looks good; a very slightly translucent dark cola with foamy tan head. Smells of dark malt, bitter hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a medium-bodied mouthfeel. Enjoyable, although the hop profile could use some pine. daknole (11049) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - APR 10, 2014
Sampled at Whole Foods. Nice black color, beige head. This is a very nice beer in a category that often lacks. The rye adds quite a nice note to the hops, roasted malt and light cocoa character. Very tasty beer. jandd1983 (4382) - Wentzville, Missouri, USA - MAY 6, 2013
Sampled at Destihl. It poured a dark brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of Amarillo hops, some peach and tangerine with a hint of roastiness. The taste was of bitterness, from the hops and some grain bitterness. Very good. hayduke (5572) - Eureka, California, USA - APR 28, 2013
UPDATED: MAY 6, 2013 Sample sized glass at the brewpub in Normal Pour was black with a tan head. Nopse of citrus and roasted malts. Medium in body. Flavor is full of hops and the finish is bitter. Nails this style perfectly. Very nice tasting beer. Strykzone (7424) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - APR 26, 2013
Sampled at Destihl Normal. Clear black with red. A beige head. The blavk part is both tasted and smelled. It is anise but also spicy. A nice hop bite leaves a long after taste. Quite nice and it is a style I don’t care for a lot.

Tap - good size tan foamy head, very black color, citrus hop and roasty aroma and flavor, kind of surprised with the roasted malt notes but still good

Ruby brown pour with a sticky, foamy head that disappears quickly. Had a 4oz draft of this from the source. Not a lot on the nose but a fairly nice offering of flavor, a pretty decent black IPA with a healthy dose of both hops and malt. jcwattsrugger (12467) - Florida and, New Jersey, USA - JAN 9, 2013
growler-tan-dk brown. A-roasty dk malt. T-resin, ashy/roasty/molasses-dk malt. esjaygee (3904) - Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA - SEP 15, 2012
On tap at GTMW 2012. Ruby brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of heavy roasted malt, mild citrus and mild coffee. Taste is more black than IPA with roasted malt, mild tannins, light citrus and low bitterness. nuplastikk (6313) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 27, 2012
On tap at DeStihl. Deep black body, lasting beige head. A relatively mild, doughy interpretation. Still has that thick peppermint patty flavor, minty. Subdued carbonation. Quite fresh, a nice straightforward beer.
