COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An American-style Black Ale with the addition of rye in the grist for added spiciness and dryness. Assertive hop bitterness, citrus/floral hop flavor and aroma, medium-high alcohol content and medium body one would expect with a Rye IPA, but distinguished by its black color from debittered black malts and a unique mashing process that reduces the amount of burnt or roasted bitterness, astringency, flavor and aroma from that would otherwise be expected in an American Stout.

Rye seems to be the perfect partner for blackened hoppy beers, and Destihl’s brew uses it especially well. This black beer has a lot of grainy spiciness in its aromatics. It works wonderfully with the earthy hop bill. Tenebrous mostly tastes like grassy, citrusy hops, but some of the malt comes through in the form of bitter, roasty graininess. It finishes long, dry, and pretty damn bitter.

Growler pour. Black body with lasting tan head. Coffee, dry black malt, chocolate, floral, rye spice aromas. Medium bodied. Dry black malt, rye bread, floral, chocolate, citrus, pine flavors---tangy drying finish---good.

Black pour with an espresso head. Light aroma, not much there to detect. Taste is slightly fruity. Dry finish. Spicy rye. Lots of lace. Slight roasted grain flavor, but kinda boring. Thin mouth

Sampled at Elijah Ps on their pre opening event. Quite dark brown with a beige head. This is earthy and a bit minty. Rich malts and some rye. Nuts. Hops are secondary and add citrus. A rich malty spicy version.

Tap - small foamy head, pitch black color, nice big grapefruit hop aroma and flavor, mildly roasty malt backbone, pretty well balanced, very good overall ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft to mini-snifter at Destihl. Looks good; a fairly opaque dark cola with light beige head. Sells and tastes of dark malt, rye spice, bitter hops, and some roast. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a bit of a rye tingle. Enjoyable.

AWISLguy (3109) - Wisconsin, USA - NOV 16, 2014
Tenebrous at Dexters black as night with foamy tan head . Black malt and caramel with some citrus . Taste is chocolatey, pine burnt malt. Tangy. Medium bodied. Fan of the style but this one may be a bit thin. Has pieces but overall is not what it could be. 14

NikkTwist (3225) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 2, 2014
Draft at Strangeloves. Opaque black ppur with a rather large frothy beige head. Tastes complicated but a bit like sweet garbage. Some mild expected chocolate/coffee notes but the overall impression is a somewhat spicy Scotch Ale. Vegemite. Browned red fruits. Rotted celery and artichoke. Pungent dark florals. Flaming pumpernickel. Quite unusual.
