COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The aroma and flavor of this classic hefeweizen (or weissbier/wheat beer with yeast) is decidedly fruity with clove, nutmeg-like and even vanilla-like phenolics. Banana-like esters are also present. This beer is made with over 50 percent malted wheat, and hop rates are quite low, with hop flavor and aroma being absent. Hefeweizen is well attenuated and very highly carbonated, yet its relatively high starting gravity and alcohol content make it a medium-full bodied beer. The color is very pale. Because yeast is present, the beer will have yeast flavor and a characteristically fuller mouthfeel and is appropriately very cloudy. On the bus at RBSG. Pours a hazy yellow with a small-ish head. The aroma has a lot of good clove and orange with a huge banana presence. The flavor has a nice clove spiciness and a citrus zip, it’s a pretty standard hefewizen but it’s well made and tasty as well.

From a growler shared by Adam on the bus down to the Michigan Summer Beer Fest. Poured a cloudy gold with a white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was full of banana and clove with a bit of spice and wheat lying underneath. Flavor was more wheat with the clove and spice growing towards the finish.

On tap at the brewpub (Bloomington, IL). Pours a murky glowing gold straw, a touch of orange body, ring of frothy head laces ok. Aromas are a nice estery banana, clove, wheat bread, flaked white wheat, faint citrusy quality. Initial is a nice blast of estery banana and cool vanilla, touch of clove, bread, flaked wheat, mellow sweetness underneath finishes dry with a light bitterness. Moves from fruit to finish pretty well. Not bad, a tasty Hefe with a quality fruity estery blast up front and moving into a bready easy drinker further in. I do like a good fresh Hefe.

Nice cloudy straw pour with pillowy soap white head . Nose is full of fruity esters, dominated by banana, with little to no clove. Also a touch of hop on the nose. Slight fusel characteristic. Flavor is sweet with a minor sour note. If you like sweet estry hefes, this one is for you. Carbonation was spot on perfect with this one.

Draught, pours a hazy orange hued golden with a creamy off-white head that leaves thin lines of lacing. Aroma is a touch sour, citrusy with notes of bubblegum. Flavor is tart, a bit sour with a slightly dry wheat grainy finish. Lacks the rich clove character that distinguishes a stellar hefe. Full creamy feel.

Unfortunately, this was one of the better beers I had in the sampler. It still wasn’t that good. Pours a cloudy gold with a white head. Sweet aroma of banana, it really stands out. Very sweet flavor, a little too sweet. I didn’t like it at all at first, but it finally grew on me a little bit.

22-Aug-08 (22-oz bottle with a competition label only: Free sample bottle for stewarding the 2008 World Beer Cup in San Diego, CA) Entered as a South German-style Hefeweizen, the nose certainly is yeast driven. Strong and very sweet aromas of bubble gum and over-ripe banana stand out, with clove adding some spiciness. The entry mirrors the nose: brown, mushy bananas and bubble gum taste very sweet, with sour dough bread and a touch of plastic phenolics toward the finish. The aftertaste is all banana, and it gets old after a few more sips. Medium in body, but the tartness just can’t cut through it all, so the mouthfeel is a bit heavy and tiring on the palate. Carbonation is rather on the light side, but there is a spicy tang that gives much needed life to what is otherwise a dead, heavy mouthfeel. Very hazy, golden in color with just a few carbonation streams. The beer pours with only a large-bubbled crown that quickly dissipates. I admit that I hate the taste of over-ripe bananas, and because the ripe banana character in this beer is overpowering, I don’t find this beer at all enjoyable. Dial this one back a notch or two.

I don’t even know why i bothered. i don’t like hefe to begin with but this one was particularly crummy. overly sour no body. no thanks

Again, at the brewpub. Pour is an orangey pale tan with a little fluffy head. There is a fair amount of sourness to accompany the cloves and citrus that was present. Unfortunately, the body doesn’t hold up and there’s not enough breadiness for my tastes. Wouldn’t mind re-trying at another time.
