Dark deep molasses nose. The beer starts deep malty. Intense rich and thick, caramel, malt, deep and rich. Quite dry, round and deep. Molasses, dark roasted caramel, brown sugars. Deep and intense rich aftertaste, moderate bitter, lots of roast, smooth and caramelly molasses mild. Fantastic! Nocturne (2238) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - DEC 30, 2017

Bottle from De Caigny. American RIS aged on "oak staves" rather than barrels, a cheaper way of obtaining a similar, though often more subtle wood aging effect. Creamy, thinnish, greyish beige head, forming a moussy ring around the glass, 'dots' of lacing on the edges and a greyish, thin, diffuse veil in the middle; black robe with hazy, ochre-mahogany edges. Aroma of black bitter chocolate, toasted chestnuts, treacle, brown rum, espresso, candied dates, blood-like iron, pear syrup, peanuts, old wet oak wood noticeable (but low in the vanilla-like scent it normally carries), varnish, whisky, old liquorice, salmiak, hints of stewed beef, vague dry sherry somewhere, and damp dead tree leaves. Restrained sweetish onset, hint of dried fig, more underlying sourishness from the roasted barley really, quickly followed by a beefy umami effect, yet not too much to become bothersome as is sometimes the case in this type of beers; medium carbonation, a tad too sharpish perhaps for the style, but still a pleasantly oily, thick, viscous mouthfeel. The whole mouth cavity is soon covered by a layer of thick caramel syrup-, hazelnut paste- and burnt toast-like malts, with a velvety feel to it; nice mixture of sweet and bitter maltiness, but the bitterness prevails. Roasted coffee grounds-like sensations in the finish, with a lovely, aromatically lingering effect, a tad powdery on the root of the tongue; a kind of sticky, bittersweet, caramelly 'syrupness' lingers too. Oaky woodiness is obvious but not too sharply tannic, just a warm kind of 'rustic' colour added to the whole. Spicy hop bitterness stings through this deep and thick maltiness, but is quickly superseded by a strong, astringent, rum-like alcohol effect, which deposits a too outspoken wryness on the root of the tongue, disturbing the pleasantly bittersweet play of malts, roasted barley and hops. Standard modern American style imperial stout, I'd say, but - unlike many more famous ones - not too sweet, putting more emphasis on the original English roasty bitterness inherent to the style, something I sincerely appreciate. Not overly complex, but rich, thick and well-executed, just one minor issue here for me: too alcoholic in the finish. This, and the beer as a whole, could improve with aging, though.
