nearbeer (5601) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - AUG 2, 2017
Half growler. Ebony with a creamy disc of foam. Mild aroma is vanilla, soy and chocolate. Tastes of cocoa with cream, licorice, blackberry, soy, molasses and charred wood. Medium-heavy bodied with smooth low-medium fizz and a drinkable balance. Oddly interesting brew at times tastes as if it was barrel aged.

UPDATED: APR 2, 2017 Tap at Station 2. Very dark and thick with almost no head. Smells roasty and ashy. Flavor is slightly sweet and roasty with a fair amount of dryness, but not dry.

Draft. Nearly black color, thick beige head with good retention. Aroma of burnt espresso, licorice. Taste has cocoa, coffee, licorice. Light body. Tasty.

Draught. This is a big serious stout with lots of sweetness and a strong finish. This one was aged on Cocoa nibs I believe.

Pleasant aroma, looks almost like a porter. Good chocolate & coffee notes, but strong alcohol aftertaste.

Keg @ Mellow Mushroom C’ville. The pour’s deep brown with a tiny head. The nose is dark red berry, cocoa, chocolate. Mild funk. The taste is hot boozy. Raisin bread, vanilla, caramel. Medium body. Boozy and a bit underweight. Overall, not a great impy.

Butters (4176) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - APR 2, 2013
Sampled at Burger Bach as the last stop of the DB mystery pin crawl. This one was my favorite beer of the night. Dark near black pour, but without much brown head. Layered notes of roast and vanilla were dominant on the flavor, but not much else. Big creamy velvety mouthfeel. It was kinda a one trick pony, but it was exactly what I was in the mood for.

Aromas of roasted coffee, dark chocolate/cocoa, and potting soil. Almost black with bronze highlights, and amoderately fading, khaki head. Dry, roasty, smokey, and bitter. Medium-full bodied with low carbonation, and a smokey and roasty finish.

Growler from Whole Foods, Virginia Beach VA: Charred oak and potting soil nose. Black, thin tan head. Coffee, prune, and fig, charred oak flavor. Full body. A little boozy for 8.5%.

On tap at Rustico during the Devil’s Backbone NoVA launch. Served in a taster glass. Pours near-black with a nice mocha head and a touch of lacing. The nose carries quite a bit of chocolate and some roast. Almost seems as if this one is barrel-aged, as everyone there seemed to get some oak and bourbon notes from it, however light. Flavor had nice chocolate and a bit of vanilla. Big body with a bit of booze. Nice.
