On tap at Rustico during the Devil’s Backbone NoVA launch. Served in a taster glass.
Pours a decently-dark brown color with a good tan head. Spots of lacing on the way down. The nose carries some sweet caramel, and a bit of bread and toffee. Mild sweetness to the flavor and just a hint of fruit in the background. Body is medium. Good finish. hershiser2 (3825) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - NOV 18, 2013

Poured a deeper brown color with reddish edges and an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of roastiness, earthy, smoke, and peat. Tastes of roast, peat, smoke, caramel, brown sugary sweetness, and earthy. Medium sweet MadRobin (2989) - Silver Spring, Maryland, USA - DEC 3, 2012
On tap at Whole Foods in Vienna, VA. Clear, dark rusty orange with light khaki head and excellent lacing. Aroma of sweet heavy malt--caramel, toffee and bread. Taste of caramel, toffee an alcohol. Sweet, even for a Scotch ale. Full/medium body and medium/low carbonation. Not the best Scotch ale; not very complex and lacking dark fruit characteristics. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone DCLawyer (2931) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - APR 26, 2013
Draft->shaker. Dark brown with small offwhite head. Caramel malt dominates. Decent, but unremarkable. WillRunForBeer (2803) - Massachusetts, USA - OCT 20, 2016
12oz bottle from a locals trade. Pours medium amber brown with a beige head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, fruity esters. Flavor is just as malty as the aroma... caramel, toffee, fruity esters here as well. I can see why they made an oak aged version. A little vanilla and tannins from the oak would elevate this. A very impressive SA. It is malty with lots of caramel to start. It is fairly sweet and malty in the nose. There is a dash of herbs in the flavor, which is top notch for the style imo. This could be the best thing I’ve tried yet from this brewery (which is now owned by Bud @#%).
