Deep rich amber and copper coloured body with a bright ruby tint when held up to the light, along with a smallish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of oak, alcohol, apples, toffee, earth, caramel, pitted fruits, cedar and a bit of butterscotch - nice and robust throughout. Full-bodied; Deeply sweet with caramel, toffee, pit fruits and raisins all noticeable along with some smooth malt, a touch of oak and dry aged characteristics along with some light spices. Aftertaste shows the sweetness, some vanilla and grain and a bit of alcohol bitterness and pungency toward the end. Overall, a good fresh barleywine that Im sampling without any additional aging, that shows a bit harsh, but fairly nice and respectable throughout. I sampled this thirty two ounce growler fill from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 11-February-2017 for US$5,00...yes 32 ounces of a barley wine for $5 in Washington! Sampled at home in Washington a day later on 12-February-2017.

Keg @ Mellow Mushroom Cville. The pours deep amber with a small off-white head. The nose is light booze. Cherry, brown bread. Sweet honey, bear claw donut. The taste is ribbon candy, apricot. Baked pumpernickel bread. Earthy, hot sweetness. Stocky, some pineapple, grassy hop. Full body, soft carbonation.

Elwood (3336) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - SEP 2, 2013
Draft at Fire Works Leesburg. It pours a deep ruddy color with a small tan head. The nose has notes of plastic, dough, and citrus. Sweet up front and obviously boozy. Rather viscous on the tongue with heavy plastic notes, caramel, and a dull bitterness. Not sure if this keg has been sitting around awhile, but this one sure doesnt match the others ratings I read in terms of quality.
