I had this on tap at the brewery’s taphouse. It’s a little muted, as abbey dubbels go, but not bad. Pours a dark cherry brown color, very little head. The aroma has that cherry/caramel malt/sugary thing that I associate more with dopplebocks than with dubbels. Those same Dr. Pepper like qualities are there in the flavor, too. Tap at Max’s. Pours hazy tawny brown with creamy off-white head. Aroma is bready and caramel malts, light oak, plums, raisins, light alcohol sweetness, and some faint spice. Flavor is bready malts, some sweetness, light woody notes, faint booze, and some dark fruit esters; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Tap at Max’s. Pours clear brown with a small, fizzy off-white head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is bourbon, oak, vanilla, toast and cookie malt, dates and figs. Draft at Mekong. Dark amber, slight head. Aroma is raisin and slight nut, hint of prune. Flavor matches. Keg @ Sedona. Deep copper with a small head. The nose is strongly woody. Loads of caramel and vanilla. Hot rum raisin cake. Rich malts. Sticky toffee pudding. The taste is hot caramel, acidic red apple skin. Sweet Belgian yeast tang. Not nearly as woody as the nose menaced. Rich, full body, a real supper. Overall, pretty enjoyable. Draft at Whole Foods Charlottesville, Pours a clear dark red brown color with not much of a head. Aroma of bread, stone fruits, spice, herbal hops, faint wood. The taste is stone fruits, spice, anise, dry fruits, mild wood. Medium bodied.
