Icebreaker Barley Wine follows the Barley Wine tradition by being very big in flavor, sweet, malty, and much higher in alcohol than the average beer. Icebreaker Barley Wine also follows the Diamond Knot tradition of having a pronounced and distinct hop profile. A distinctly hopped Barley Wine sounds unusual only until you take your first sip, then you wonder why everyone doesn't make their Barley Wine like this. The Maris Otter malt comes through in this Barley Wine with a sweet, chocolately malt flavor, that has a marvelous dry finish. Icebreaker Barley Wine features: 100% Maris Otter Malt Chinook Hops for bittering Columbus Hops for finish Columbus Hops for dry hopping London Ale Yeast.

On tap at Beveridge Place. I smell cherry, alcohol, oak and caramel. I taste powdered sugar, wood & peach. The two parts clash, and a bit too sweet, And I paid $7 for 10 oz of this.

Draught at the MLT brewpub. Pours a hazy amber color with a moderate off-white head on it. Nose is slightly sweet with some caramel notes to it, and seems just a tady boozy. Taste is slightly sweet and very smooth, with a pleasant kick of booziness to it. Pleasant drink.

Growler that Ive had for about a month, held up great! Little caramel aroma, woodsy edge, deceptively light. Dark tawny, small white head. Sharp maplewood, little orange rind, some red delicious apple, milky caramel. Heat comes through a touch sharp, almost distracting. Softens later on.

My Bottom Line:
Maple sugar and bitter hop resins merge in this simple, nourishing Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam settles atop the dull caramel amber.
-This is not like any other Barley Wines Ive had, which is great, yet its simplicity and lack of refinement make it somewhat disappointing to me.
-Sustained carbonation makes for a creamy mouthfeel with the ample residual sugars.
-Hops are also wooden, tea-like at times.

On tap at the Front St. brewpub.

Draft, Beveridge Place. Medium amber pour, white head. Brown sugar, toffee, dried fruit, herbal hops on aroma. Strikingly bitter when sipped. Theres still brown sugar and slightly doughy malts, but it becomes very resinous and finishes dry and bitter. A little alcohol warmth of the finish, but overall not much of a burn to this. A good hoppy barleywine.

Sample glass. Amber with a light head. Sugary hop scent. Creamy body. Alcohol dominates the first sip. Then big burnt sugar rush. Burns the roof of my mouth already scarred from last nights pizza. Almost a whiskey flavour. Smoke, peat a complex BW.

@ Diamond Knot. Clear dark caramel color/ lasting ivory head. Nice pit fruit, spicy caramel, toffee, floral hop aromas. Rich spicy sweet caramel, green raison, pit fruit flavors with medium spicy alcohol heat to finish.

Tap at the brewpub (schooner). Pours dark amber with a creamy beige head. Rich malt aroma. Flavor is sweet, but theres an unexpected hop offsetting it. The malt is a bit mixed. Caramel with hints of something darker. Not burnt or chocolate though. Finishes sweetish, but not overly so. Damn stuff drinks like water. Yum.

Otown Throwdown III tasting. Pours a medium clear amber with a thin lasting head. Aroma is strange at first- bread and butter pickles, then earthy hops, grass, light citrus and pine with a sweet caramel malt kick. Flavor is smooth clean caramel, toffee, biscuit malts, sweet middle, with a earthy grassy bitterness in the end leaving some decent malt lingering around- very soft smooth mouthfeel. Overall not outstanding though.

Taster Beveridge Place Barleywine Bacchanal Seattle, WA
Aroma: Very light aroma with a little high alcohol in the nose.
Appearance: Amber in color, clear with a thin head.
Flavor: Very faint malty flavor this was too old and just went south with the flavor and the hops where too bitter now. Not well balanced.
Palate: Dry tasteless finish.
Overall: Nott he brew I was hoping for and it did not stand up to the time. This was a bad pour. This was the 2009 batch.
