On tap at DDC 13th anniversary party. Near black in colour, tan head. The aroma is of light roast, some light hops, chocolate. The flavour has some light peppers, roasted malts, some chocolate, light citrus notes. Light spice and hops in the finish.

Date de prod. 2011. Noir avec un beau collet beige. Bien puissant pour son pourcentage 4.8%. Forte amertume. Très amère. Bien épicé. Chaleur du piment. Fine acidité. Légèrement chocolaté. Zeste d'agrume. Florale. Légèrement sucré. Très divertissant. J'aime beaucoup.

In short: A roasted hoppy black beer with unusual spices. Original beer that didn’t win me over.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Near black body topped by a small tan head
In long: Nose is medium roast, medium hoppy and an unusual chinese dish spiciness. Taste starts like a moderately hoppy, light body and very roasted Black IPA offering coffee notes and dry grassy bitterness. Then the spiciness kicks-in and comes back in the after-taste with black pepper (which I like) and also something resembling cayenne pepper (which I didn’t like so much). The light body was a bit foamy/airy. This is an unusual beer but its spicy nature will win some people and turn off others. I was kind of in the middle. This beer was some kind of spiced Black IPA and the wife and I drank this side-by-side with their “normal” Black IPA (Pénombre), I preferred the Pénombre but the wife thought the 13e Étage was a more interesting offering. Opinions will vary greatly on a beer like this. Funny that a beer is called “13th Floor” but over 90% of hotels & skyscrapers don’t have a 13th floor because people are superstitious and believe it is brings misfortune to sleep/work on a 13th floor, see a black cat, walk under a ladder or break a mirror and eat the pieces.

On tap at the Blind Tiger for their Dieu du Ciel event. Pours a deep ruby tinged black to brown with a medium sized beige head. Loads of soft roasted sesame, roast and dusty cocoa. Medium bodied, chocolate and toast. Apparently there’s some yuzu and peppers in here, but I’m really not picking them up. Mostly I just get black sesame, which is quite nice, even if it’s unexpected. Lingering sesame, cocoa, and more roast on the finish. Woah… weird. I don’t get any yuzu or pepper at all in the beer, but then minutes later a large amount of carbon dioxide requires release from my stomach, and there it is, and it starts showing up on the tongue after that. Very hidden, but it does slowly make its way forward. Very interesting.

Draft at Blind Tiger with Andrew, Streets, Mark, Ben and Kyle. Pours a deep brownish black that you can somewhat see partially through if you hold it up to light. Aroma is fierce pine hop and spicy pepper. Mouthfeel is bitter with notes of pine hops up front and then a nice compliment of pepper following.

On tap at blind tiger. Probably the first instance of hot peppers integrated into a beer that I actually think works. Malt, cocoa, and subtle sting.

Dark brown color, with a tan colored head, mild roasted, black, chocolate, toasted malt, peppery spicy nose with a light herbal leafy hop, subtle zesty yuzu peel note, with some roasted coffee bean, burnt toast accents in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a leafy, herbal, spicy peppery, faint green hot jalapeno pepper, soft roasted, black malt character with some dark bitter chocolate, mild black coffee notes and with a light leafy, grassy, resiny flowery hop zesty citrusy backbone, leading towards a hot peppery, roastiness, lingering leafy, grassy, resiny hop bitterness finish.

On tap at DDC Anniv.
Appearance : Dark amber with a small creamy brown head.
Aroma : Very spicy with lots of coffee.
Taste : Fruity with spices and lots of coffee. Finish has coffee and spices with light licorice.Rather dry with light resinous notes.
Overall : Nice beer. Interesting flavors. Felt rather complex for such a low abv. Nothing outstanding though.
