In short: A fruity chocolaty dark ales with mild wine barrels notes.
How: Tap at brewpub.
The look: Very dark mahogany body topped by a small tan head.
In long: Nose is roasted, chocolaty, fruity (many dark fruits, not particularly grapes/vinous) with subtle oak barrels. Body is medium to full in size, a generous but smooth carbonation, a velvety texture, pleasant mouthfeel. Taste is chocolate cake without icing, fresh juicy dark grapes, other dark fruits, medium roasted. The barrels are so discretely integrated that the beer feels more like a dark ale brewed with dark grapes than a wine barrel aged one. I found the medium roasted black cake character of the malt bill worked admirably well with the dark grape flavors. A certain tannins astringency in the finish builds up sip after sip to confirm the wine barrel aging. Rather easy to drink for the style. A beer that offers class over intensity. My first beer back in Montreal after a long oversea trip, and I love going to DDC after a long vacation, or after a short vacation, a after no vacation at all, or during a vacation, basically what Im trying to say is I wish DDC didnt close at night.

My Bottom Line :
Roasted malts become dark chocolate, as black grapes seep out of wood in this balanced, elegant barrel-aged creation.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A sheet of foam tops the darkness.
-This is leaner than your average DDC strong ale, which is a nice change of pace.
-The dark chocolate become chicory-like at times.
-The flavor profile is not as intense as your usual DDC strong ale either.
-All flavors are well balanced and agreeable throughout the glass.

On tap at the brewpub.

On tap. Dark murky brown pour. Aroma of wine, oak, light roasty notes. Taste is roasty, winey, burnt toast, light vanilla, nice mellow barrel contribution, not overdone. Alcohol is barely perceptible, quite dry on the palate. Good stuff.
