Black ale with aromas and flavours of vanilla, dark chocolate, bourbon and roasted malt. The vanilla and cocoa marry nicely, without out-competing each other, to produce a surprisingly well balanced beer. This beer is mildly hoppy, but the cocoa introduces a touch of bitterness. Its colour may be intimidating, but it is a very smooth beer within reach of most beer drinkers. This highly appreciated dessert beer is brewed with organic fair-trade cocoa and first rate vanilla beans.

Bottle 34,1 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours an opaque deep dark brown with a vague tint of red and a creamy light brown head. Aroma is sweet milk chocolate. Medium body, dry burned malts and loads of cocoa powder and sweet milk chocolate. Some malt bitterness in the finish. 080210

Bottle at home in London. Pours deep brown with a creamy beige ad. The nose holds vanilla, baking cocoa, burnt toast, some toasted caramel, faint oxidation (this bottle is more than a year old). Medium sweet flavour with a luxurious chocolate character, light ashy roast, bittersweet cocoa. Some coffee grounds, earth, woody dryness. Medium bodied, lightly oily, with fine to average carbonation. Nicely balanced finish with more ashy roast, bittersweet baking cocoa, vanilla pods, dashes of scorched earth. Good depth, solid body. Great stuff overall.

Black with a big dark brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, milk chocolate, cocoa and vanilla. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate roasted bitter finish. Smooth. 050711

Koelschtrinker (22064) - Köln (Cologne), GERMANY - MAY 29, 2011
9/12/11/11/13/12

Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival, 2007-09-22, 7-3-7-3-14=34
Black color. Phenolic aroma, sweet, roasted malt. Medium body strength, but round, with a unique flavor of dark chocolate. Monodimensional, good, not impressive.

Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival, 2007-09-21, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Black color. Strong aroma of medium chocolate. Sweet flavor, medium-light body, very strong chocolatey flavor (reminds me the chocolate Easter eggs), original. Good.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2013 330mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out loads of vanilla upfront, followed by sweetened cocoa. Flavour is very much the same, with a wonderful balance between the vanilla and cocoa. Very soft and delicate on the palate - certainly not a robust stout, but more like soft, velvety one with more delicate flavours. Wonderfully crafted.

Bottle at Chriso’s Kook Tasting 09. Thanks to Crosling for this one. Labelled as Aphrodite. Black, tan head. Vanilla choc coconut aroma. Slightly powdery choc. Quite a lot of vanilla,, but I thought it was drinkable enough, just too much powdery choc. Dry finish. Yes, fails a bit in the mouth.

Oakes (19363) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 13, 2017
Draft. Quite black. Thick (nitro) head. Rich chocolate and a touch of toast...smells sweet. Sweet and chocolate...ok that rich hot chocolatey stuff, honestly this has some good taste but lacks complexity...the nitro...would like more character.

rlgk (18843) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - SEP 23, 2007
(Stockholm Beer Festival 2007) Draught. Black, small brown head. Huge chocolate and cocoa aroma, vanilla and oaky notes. Chocolate flavor, quite roasted and a bit dry. Was there some mint notes as well?
