This beer style was created in the late 1990’s by some breweries on the west coast of the United States, and most notably by Rogue. It’s an extreme version of the American IPA. It’s a beer with strong amber hues and dominating hop flavours and tastes. It is however well balanced through the presence of a combination of malts. This beer is usually dry hopped, a tradition that is adhered to by Dieu du Ciel!. The bouquet of the beer consists of floral hops. In the mouth, the bitterness is quite strong, without being extreme, and the alcohol makes its presence known, without being domineering. The aftertaste is dry and less syrupy than a barley wine. Thus, it is a very complex and bitter beer, but always well balanced.

TET (3230) - Kaarina, FINLAND - MAY 11, 2014
A hazy, orange beer with a medium and blond head. The nose of strong caramell, fruits, peaches, some herbs and pine. Taste of peaches, lots of fructose, herbs and some wet wood. Enough of bitterness to drying the taste. Almost full bodied, still easy to drink. Unfortunately, the over one year old bottle can be noticed. Quite sweet DIPA, the best part is the very easy drinkability.

Ça m’a fait bien plaisir de voir ça sur les tablettes!!! Et c’est aussi plaisant sur mes papilles ;-) Je préfère l’Herbe à Détourne dans le genre, mais elle est excellente et sent très bon.

2013 bottle, perhaps a bit dusty. Golden amber pour, nice finger of frothy white head, solid lacing. Aroma, lots of malts, lemon, a little bit of hops but overall very sweet and malty. Taste, malty sweetness up front, followed by a nice dose of hoppy bitterness, some pine and a very smooth finish with some slight heat from the booze, medium mouthfeel. Really well done, excellent balance between the malty sweetness, and hop dose. Very solid.

Orange amber color with a little bit of foam. Aromas of aromatic hops, alcohol and sugar. Flavors of aromatic and fruity hops, alcohol and sugar.

Bottle at home. Pours a slightly hazy amber-copper colour with a large white head that slowly settles and sticks all up the glass. Medium body and medium carbonation. Aroma is tropical fruits, oranges, you don’t feel the alcohol. Bitter finish. Very light/easy to drink for and Imperial IPA. Nice.

PhillyCraft (7981) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 5, 2014
glass at the brewery. Pours brown amber wth small white head and sporadic lacing. Aromas are cherry, malt, plum, light sugar, orange flavors hops. Flavor is like some hoppy and sticky marmalade. Enjoyable but maybe a touch to hot for 8.6 and a tad too sugary

VDuquerroux (1895) - Airvault, Haut-Poitou, FRANCE - MAR 12, 2014
Bottle, 341mL. Home. Spectrum from orange to brown on the top. Clear sparkling beer with a small white-off head. Nice lacing. Fruity and floral aroma (red berries, blackcurrant), herbs, caramel, alcohol. Taste oscillate between bitterness and sweetness at a high frequency. "Swing taste". Body... in movement. Oily texture. Good carbonation. Bitter finish with alcohol note. Overvall, I loved this beer : a fruit-basket with a lot of energy !

Davros (3309) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAR 5, 2014
Pours amber with a fading head.
Nose shows rich sweet malt with a little piny and resinous hops too. Some bready malt and golden syrup.
Similarly sweet flavours, loads of malt. Some booze and mild hops attempt to balance it out. A bit one-dimensional.
Could use more carbonation.
