Draught. At Dieu du Ciel during Mondial 2009 - day 1. Gold with an average white head. Grainy with mild typical sweet Belgian spice/yeast character, noticeable alcohol. The alcohol initially dominated the flavour, but then the bready yeastiness took over - not too sweet. Solid body, a little bitter from the spiciness, with a slightly boozy sweet finish. Draught at Dieu du Ciel, Montréal, QC. Pours a clear deep orange with an average size creamy white head. Aroma’s grainy along with some fruit, spices and light hops. Golden beer. Aroma is lightly spicy with a touch of light honeyish character. There is a bit of apricot. It fortunately lacks the intense sweetness of the majority of US-brewed tripels. Copper pour with small white head. Aroma has orange, grapefruit, and caramel maltiness, with spruce/fir notes as well. Flavor is aggressive and citrusy at the start, then compacts to a sugary and flavorful finish. Well made, very nice.

Orange amber pour with smallish white head. Aroma is orange grapefruit with caramel and molasses malt, and a backbone of resinous pine and spruce. Citrus dominates the flavor. Caramel , brown sugar and molasses make for a well balanced, multifaceted and complete brew. Palate is thick and desirable. Mild carbonation with a syrup like quality. Tap at DDC. Pours a deepish copper with a thin head and some spoty lace. Aroma is spicy, orange zest , fruity esters, , earthy and herbal hops. Flavor is a touch sweet, with candi sugar, toasted malt,s bready, sugary, caramel, molases, orange zest, fruity esters, spicy vanilay phenolics, but overall a good balance- smooth and a slight sweet, but not too sweet finish- good for a very strong BSA. Ta!!! Ça arrache tout’, ça! Summer time is a few days away and DDC serves the stronger alchoolic taste I’ve ever had in any of their beers. 10,5% ABV was written on the board but it truly seemed like 18 or 20% ABV, as I had port and wines that were higher in ABV but less intense in alcool taste than this beast. The nose is very malty and slightly sweet. Dark golden color, not much foam. Taste is powerful and malty, with notes of caramel but the hopping is not that obvious, or it is mostly clouded under a huge domination of alchool. Mostly alchoolic aftertaste also. The texture is, on the other hand, pretty thick and far from watery, with a smooth carbonation; very pleasing. Amber in colour with a thin off white coloured head, thin lacing. The aroma has moderate amounts of alcohol, lots of hops, sweet with bready malts, caramel. The flavour is sweet, upfront alcohol, some yeast, moderate amounts of hops and highly sweet. Hot mouthfeel, medium body, high carbonation. A belgian Barley Wine. The alcohol makes to attempt to hide in this one but at the same time manages to retain balance.
