Rauchbock. This typical automn beer is brewed with beech smoked malt. Because it is fermented with lager style yeast, this beer offers very little in the way of fruity esters, leaving the way clear for the smoky alcohol flavours. To the taste, it is relatively full-bodied and sweet, with a nice malty flavour.

Les fruits foncés se font rapidement envahir par un nuage de boucane épais mais non-toxique, très agréable et facile à boire.

On tap at the Dieu du Ciel 14th anniversary party, pours a dark, dark amber with a large beige head. Aroma is quite smoky, with smoked roasted malt, but not too burnt or ashtray-like. Flavour is moderate smoky, with lots of smoked malt and loads of caramel malt to balance and take out the smokiness. A lot more moderate in the smoke character than many of this style, with a lot more caramel malts. This is certainly a good thing in my books, making this quite drinkable.

The 1st of my 3 DDC brews at blind tiger this Saturday of which I drank in reverse appropriate order. Nose rich and smoky and it’s a deep dark pour. Tastes of caramel, earth, pine, and lots of smokey bacon flavor. Slightly warming on finish. Really good

On tap at the Blind Tiger for their Dieu du Ciel event. Pours a clear orange with a medium sized creamy beige head. Huge smoke on the nose, woody and full of campfire. Big smoke gives way to a somewhat saccharine sweetness, smoke and toast. A bit too sweet on the finish, caramel and more smoke. Almost a burnt marshmallow note.

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2011 Draft at Blind Tiger with Andrew, Streets, Mark, Ben and Kyle. Pours a deep brownish black body with thin off white lacing. Aroma is smoked meat and band-aids. I’m not a huge fan of band-aids. Mouthfeel takes a turn for the win, with insane notes of savory meat - think pulled pork from Fette Sau! Insane meat flavor. Obviously, you can never drink more than a few smoked brews, but this has got to be one of the best.

From tap at the brewpub. Pours clear and golden amber to deep hazlenut brown with a small off-white and lacing head. Aroma is dense smoked and meaty. Ham and burned wood. Meaty and lingering smoked. Nice and mellow. Smooth smoked and roasted malty finish.

on tap at brewpub. hazy dark brown with a decent medium dark beige head, some retention, some lacing. nose is smoked bacon, lots of malts, residual brown sugar, molasses. umami, lots of smoky layers, caramel and roasted malts, licorice, some sweetness balanced by medium hopping - resinous and grassy. soft to average carbonation, medium to full body, long bitter and umami finish. very nice!

Draught at Dieu du Ciel, Montreal. Dark brown, small to average and mostly diminishing light brown head. Moderate, malty and sweetish aroma, roasted malt, caramel and smokiness and some bacon. Body is medium, malty and sweetish flavor, caramel, some smokiness and faint bacon. Finish is average, malty and sweetish, caramel, faint smokiness. Really nice smoky aroma with bacon (Bamberg style), flavor/finish lacks the bacon - smokiness, too much caramel in the finish.
