Équinoxe du Printemps (French for "spring equinox") is the quintessential marriage of two great traditions: beer brewing in Scotland, and maple syrup production in Quebec. At the first draught, the mouth is overcome by woody, malty flavours, sustained by a discrete touch of sweetness. The aftertaste brings about the flavours of maple, which are sufficiently present to be appreciated, but never overwhelming the typical flavours of a Scotch Ale.

Equinoxe du printemps is brewed only once a year in January. It is aged for two months in order to attain a perfect balance in taste. Then, it is sold starting March 21st, until stocks last.

Bottle from Hop City in Atlanta. Pint glass in hotel room. Pours a foggy brown with a small eggshell head. Some sporadic lacing. Aroma is scotch, wood, toast, and maple. The taste is similar with the majority of the flavor scotch and maple. Also some toasted malts, slight caramel, and dry yeasts. Medium to full body and a dry finish.

341ml bottle (thx, Alex M.!). Bottled on 2015-02-06. Pours an opaque dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is malty, dark fruits, caramel and maple syrup notes. Taste is roasted malt, boozy and hoppy bitterness, woody. The beer is already 2 years old, but it is still hot and bitter, I am surprised. Not sure if a good way, though :) Probably it would need to be aged for a couple of more years :)

Appearance: Dark, brown body but when held to the light, more reddish in color. Has a nice tan head, 2 fingers. Smell: Faint, sweet smell. As it warms, maple syrup aroma gets stronger. Smell reminds me of maple taffy poured out on the snow at a sugar shack, nice. Taste: The taste backs up the smell with strong malty, maple flavors. Very sweet, but kind of one-dimensional. Mouthfeel: This is better. Warming up, feels thick & chewy with fairly active carbonation. Caramel and maple syrup make if boozy & creamy, warming the mouth. Reviewed on: 06-19-2008

Bottle-conditioned, 2015(?). Opaque, burnt umber color; super thin head; some small specks of sediment floating at bottom. Sweet, dessert aromas of custard, maple syrup, & vanilla. Flavor starts off with toffee & dates as you’d expect; maple notes in the middle leading to a roasted malt aftertaste. Medium-light body with moderate carb & a dry a finish. Warms up to have a sharp yeast note along with some booze, too. Overall it’s on the sweet side with the addition of maple syrup, altho the maple doesn’t dominate the flavor at all.

Bottle in Seattle. Thin ring foam, rich and dark malty brown. Deep raisin, dark fruit skin, sweet oak and alcohol on the nose. Full body, leathery banana and brown sugar. Some alcohol burn at the finish. Maple is present but is a faint overtone. Malt is rich, nicely metallic and a touch chalky. Delicious and pretty unique. Ruddy, chunky body... perfectly rough. Very nice.

Bottle. A- Boozy, oak, iron, burnt caramel, subtle smoke, subtle cherry. A- Dark mahogany brown color, dark liquid, beige head. T- Strong oak, booze. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, boozy finish. O- With 8 months of age on this I can’t decide if I should have drank it sooner or let it age more. Not getting a whole lot of maple. I think it adds to the booziness and woody notes more than anything. Maybe adds a touch of smoke too. Too much wood and not enough maple. Overall, it’s good but I expect a lot more. I’ve been mostly let down with Dieu du Ciel. Quite possibly a bit over hyped and a bit over priced for what you get.
