3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from a 355 cc bottle into a stem glass. Pours dark reddish brown with a tan head leaving generous lace. Aroma is dark dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel apple, maple syrup, and malts. Flavour is complex dark malts, scotch ale, subtle maple and molasses. Very well balanced. I was scared the maple syrup might be too dominating but this is not the case. Great combination.
11.5 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 1/27/2017. Pours murky reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, maple syrup, wood, herbal, grass, and pepper; with lighter notes of raisin, plum, fig, date, apricot, apple, peat smoke, toffee, molasses, chocolate, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, maple syrup, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, maple syrup, wood, herbal, grass, and pepper; with lighter notes of raisin, plum, fig, date, apricot, apple, peat smoke, toffee, molasses, chocolate, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, woody, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, maple syrup, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, dark fruit, peat smoke, toffee, molasses, chocolate, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, maple syrup, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from bitterness. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/silky, and slightly slick/sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 9.1%. Overall this is an excellent Scotch ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, maple syrup, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. Very rich English malt complexity with great maple syrup presence; mild earthy hop balance and restrained fruity English yeast character in the background. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example. Faberanza (17) - Torino, ITALY - NOV 15, 2017
UPDATED: NOV 15, 2017 Colore marrone scuro e schiuma beige poco persistente.
bottle. deep mahogany with small head. lightly sweet, roasty caramel, maple and brown sugar. a hint of peat, very light cocoa, dark fruit. quite smooth for the ABV. chucklemation (1798) - Royal Oak, Michigan, USA - NOV 9, 2017
Pours a brown color with an off-white foam head and plenty of chunks floating about. Aroma is caramel, toffee, bread, and cracker. Flavor is similar, sweet with an astringent finish. Well-carbonated. Not quite as good as I expected based on the brewer and style. Inbreak (6721) - Loddefjord, NORWAY - NOV 5, 2017

Nice light brown fizzy-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly dry boozy, almonds, minerals, weeds, fruit stones, caramel malts, bark, alcohol, candi sugar, burnt toast, grass, raisins. Taste is slightly sweet boozy, weeds, candi sugar, fruit stones, almond essence, raisins, alcohol, bark, burnt toast, grass, soil. Medium bitterness, slightly harsh boozy mouthfeel. Not my cup of tea.
bottle (bbe 2020). brown nutty cleary. almonds, vanilla malty creamy nose. candies, booze. light cedar. full bodied, sweets, good bitters though, actually quite bitter caramelly finish. feels like loads of calories, slight woody almondy buttery creamy caramelly butterscotchy ale. clean. nice. not that harmoneous though, kinda poking in all directions. lotsa flavour, not that well woven together. an experience nontheless. Pours a dark copper with a thin, light tan head. The aroma is big, sweet, and boozy. The whiskey really jumps out, while oak, caramel, raisin, earthy malt, and vanilla are also found. The taste is sweet, but not nearly as much as the nose led me to believe. The main attractions are caramel and whiskey, while vanilla serves as a good compliment. Undertones are spice, raisin, licorice, and oak. Finally its lightly floral and earthy. Mild and lingering whiskey aftertaste. Medium in body, and with a thick, smooth texture. A lot is going on in this one, and it all comes together very well. Very enjoyable. TEJA (3349) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - OCT 20, 2017
UPDATED: OCT 20, 2017 bottle from Systembolaget sweden. Very short light brown head. clear light brown color. small light roasted and chocolate aroma. sweet malty tadte that is replaced by a astringent bitterness. Maakun (6814) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - OCT 5, 2017
Bottle at home. Deep mahogany with some floaters and a thick, creamy lasting beige head. Carmel, sugary, some roasted notes, quite toasty and earthy maple, old leaves, some dark chocolate, soft grassy and fruity hops in the finish. Over medium sweet and bitter. Full bodied. More bitter than I expected and quite earthy, not a massive sugary maple assault. Quite nice. austinpowers (2831) - San Francisco, California, USA - AUG 20, 2017
Bottle from Jug Shop, San Francisco. Insane. Dark. Vanilla flavored scotch ale with fabulous malt depth and mirky goodness.
