Équinoxe du Printemps (French for "spring equinox") is the quintessential marriage of two great traditions: beer brewing in Scotland, and maple syrup production in Quebec. At the first draught, the mouth is overcome by woody, malty flavours, sustained by a discrete touch of sweetness. The aftertaste brings about the flavours of maple, which are sufficiently present to be appreciated, but never overwhelming the typical flavours of a Scotch Ale.

Equinoxe du printemps is brewed only once a year in January. It is aged for two months in order to attain a perfect balance in taste. Then, it is sold starting March 21st, until stocks last.

Modest head that dies to a thin film--leaves spotty lace that slides down the glass. The color is light brown and very cloudy. Sugary malt aroma; the maple syrup really shows up here. Sweet crystal malt and maple syrup flavor. Enough hop to provide interest and keep the Scotch Ale true to form. There’s a touch of smokiness and molasses. Rich body as expected. I wouldn’t describe this as a quaffing beer, but like others from Dieu du Ciel, it is complex and interesting.

5/10/17 (Atomic Liquors, Downtown Las Vegas, NV). 9.1% ABV, 8 Oz draft pour into tulip glass. Dark brown pour, slight tan head. Aroma negligible. Scotch the predominant flavor. Light rye and maple noted but not overwhelming. Thin texture. Overall OK beer, nice but too light.

Deep brown color with an off white head. Sweet malty plum aroma and taste. Reminiscent of a quad. Notes: on tap at Atomic Kitchen , May ’17

On draught. Really taste scotch ale. Lighter than some scotch ales with a malty character. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

11.5 oz bottle. Bottled 2016-01-08. Aroma is apples, raisins, oxidation, grain. Pours hazy brown with a dissipating beige head. Taste is medium-level of sweet and alcoholic, oxidation, fruity esters, finishing dry. Reminds of certain English barleywines more than any kind of Scotch ale I’ve ever had. A little over the hill for me.

Poured into a thistle, the appearance was mainly a dark burnt red almost brown color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Spotty lace. The aroma had some dried woodiness, smoke and peat up front. Maple warms in for a nice blend. Some caramel and toffee malts play underneath. The flavor leaned towards a sweet dry woody taste initially and then the caramel and toffee malts come in a bit more as it warms. Maple comes in for balance. Woody dry aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Good strength from the ABV is felt. Dryness does show some clinginess to my tongue. Low carbonation. Overall, nicely done scotch ale for the most part. Perhaps a bit dryer than expected. And though I don’t see any bottling dates, a part of me says this is an older bottle. Still, I bet this stuff is magical when fresh, part of me thinks the maple comes out a lot more.

341ml bottle (thx, Alex M.!). Bottled on 2015-02-06. Pours an opaque dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is malty, dark fruits, caramel and maple syrup notes. Taste is roasted malt, boozy and hoppy bitterness, woody. The beer is already 2 years old, but it is still hot and bitter, I am surprised. Not sure if a good way, though :) Probably it would need to be aged for a couple of more years :)

Appearance: Dark, brown body but when held to the light, more reddish in color. Has a nice tan head, 2 fingers. Smell: Faint, sweet smell. As it warms, maple syrup aroma gets stronger. Smell reminds me of maple taffy poured out on the snow at a sugar shack, nice. Taste: The taste backs up the smell with strong malty, maple flavors. Very sweet, but kind of one-dimensional. Mouthfeel: This is better. Warming up, feels thick & chewy with fairly active carbonation. Caramel and maple syrup make if boozy & creamy, warming the mouth. Reviewed on: 06-19-2008

Bottle-conditioned, 2015(?). Opaque, burnt umber color; super thin head; some small specks of sediment floating at bottom. Sweet, dessert aromas of custard, maple syrup, & vanilla. Flavor starts off with toffee & dates as you’d expect; maple notes in the middle leading to a roasted malt aftertaste. Medium-light body with moderate carb & a dry a finish. Warms up to have a sharp yeast note along with some booze, too. Overall it’s on the sweet side with the addition of maple syrup, altho the maple doesn’t dominate the flavor at all.
