The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

ABV initially 8.5%, changed in late 2012 to 9%.

Draft glass @ CML Fontainas. Black, soapy mocha head, largely solid. Nose is overly umami, cacao, licorice, mocha. Heavy umami, licorice body with heavy vegetable coffee, bitter roast,.. Body is licorice, umami, cacao,... Interesting to try a Dieu du Ciel classic with a cool name but I found it far too licorice heavy for my preference with strong vegetable coffee,... Not my thing unlike expected.

GIJOE (1249) - North Berwick, Maine, USA - JUN 12, 2017
Pours black with a monstrous brown head. Nose is char, dark-roasted malt, coffee. Hints of licorice, leather, and tobacco. Taste is quite bitter, although balanced somewhat by a burly malt component. Long bitter chocolate finish. Impressive brew.

33cl bottle purchased @ La caisse de bières. Belle robe noire brillante avec une fine mousse brune. Attaque sur le grain de café avec un final tout en amertume. Sécheresse prononcée sur la fin. DLC dépassée depuis 8 mois.

Bottle from the LCBO. Inky black with a small dark mahogany head that fades quickly to a sheet. Nose is lots of roast, molasses, coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruit, with notes of licorice, vanilla and minerals. Taste is light sweet molasses with a much more pronounced coffee and chocolate bitterness and a touch of plum tartness. Mouth is medium+ and chewy with soft carbonation and a lingering bitter finish. 8+/4/9/4/17

carlom (72) - ITALY - APR 11, 2017
Colore nero, schiuma nocciola poco persistente, aromi di caffè e malto tostato. Sapori caffè, vaniglia e cioccolato, finale leggermente amaro e affumicato. Una scout importante.

trapped (3374) - New York, TURKEY - MAR 31, 2017
Draught. Inky black with small creamy reddish-tan head, mocha aroma, medium carbonation, bitter mocha taste with alcohol overtones, thick body, long bitter finish. The alcohol bite is a bit too obvious.
