This "Imperial Dark Saison" is a collaboration between DDC and Shiga Kogen. It has the grain bill of an Imperial Stout, hops grown at Shiga Kogen and is fermented with Saison yeast.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Black with huge light brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, medium body, medium carbonation, and thick Big-bubble lacing. Taste is big rich dark chocolate and some herbal hops with dry finish. Imperial saison or strong Belgian ale not really, imperial porter more like, good beer.

Noire très opaque. Arômes de malt torréfié avec des notes de chocolat et d’agrumes sur un fond sucré. Belle petite amertume surprenante et un goût de malt fumée. Alcool puis sécheresse en fin de bouche. Etrange mélange entre une stout, une bière belge forte et une saison (très sèche sur la fin).

Pour is black with lots of dark tan head and leaves a ton of lacing. Nose has a fair bit of roasted malt, moderate green olive note, mild dark fruit sweetness, faint peppery spice. Flavor follows suit, assertive olive, lighter roasty malt, subtle dark fruits and a peppery spice that hasn’t been in some of the other stouts. Very dry finish, assertive carb, medium body, fairly smooth.

A big departure from past Isseki Nicho editions.The nose is of dank hops, yeast and sweet malt. It has a dense dark brown colour topped by a frothy, thick tan head. Whereas past versions verged on imperial stout status, the 2015 edition is a bit of a mixture of less compelling elements in my view. Roasted malt, dank hops, Belgian yeast and some sour cherries and berries are featured in this version. A far cry from the crisp, clean, creamy chocolate and coffee "near stout" of bygone days. Why use the same name?

341ml Bottle from Halles St-Jean. Aroma: citrus, roasted malt, chocolate cake. App: pitch black with medium brown head and great lacing. Taste and palate: full body, creamy, smooth, light sweetness and light bitter finish. Overall: great balance between the sweetness and bitterness. for some reason I didn?t rate the previous batch but this one is quite awesome. Highly drinkable. A 4 pack might not be enough to last a year without with. Will grab some now. As always great job DDC.

Nez: Malt torréfié, agrumes, fruits noirs Bouche: Café, chocolat, fruits noirs, notes d’agrumes, vineuse, belle rondeur, finale sèche Elle emplit la bouche très longuement. Quelle complexité ! Une bière d’excellence.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. Poured with a huge head, there is definitely brettanomyces at work here. The aroma is chocolate, cherry, dusty, estery. The flavor is chocolate, cherries, almond, burnt sugar, ashy. This is better than I expected.

Bière ayant subi une vieillissement de presque un an. Dégustée bien tranquillement, la Isseki Nicho est noire, mousseuse, têtue, collante au verre d’une mousse onctueuse et formée de minuscules bulles actives et agressives. Au nez, je ressens beaucoup d’herbe, du litchi, des levures saison mais qui peinent à poindre tant la torréfaction est importante et omniprésente. Ça sent les champs brûlés. Je puis affirmer, puisque je connais assez bien cette bière, que le vieillissement ne lui va pas mal du tout. Le côté furieusement herbacé en bouche que l’on retrouve dans la version ’’fraîche’’ laisse place ici à quelque chose de beaucoup plus rond. Je ressens beaucoup de lavande certes, mais le manque d’équilibre que je lui reproche habituellement est maintenant un problème qui pour moi est résolu par le vieillissement. Un sucre résiduel s’est maintenant installé et avec lui se présentent d’étonnantes notes de vinaigre balsamique, sans que le liquide soit pour autant acide. Alcool très discret pour une bière de ce calibre, effervescence forte et densité appréciable, cette bière complexe n’est pas faite pour les palais non exercés.

Bottle gifted from the right honourable Hippyhop -- thanks, man! Pours like a muscular imperial stout into the glass, oil leak black with a rocky mocha cap. I could smell the saison yeast as it poured out of the bottle & gurgled into the glass, hinting that this was not going to be a ’normal’ drinking experience. In fact, I love the border blur of styles that is at play here: sour cocktail cherries, yeasty funk, roasted grains, boozy warmth goodness, overripe blackberries, wet pipe tobacco & soy sauce. Most interesting is the three act arc of the sip: starting with an imperial stout mouthfeel to a prickly saison middle & a conclusion that trails off into a dry, roasted finish. There’s a lot of moving parts here & it --along with the 9.5% kick -- forces you to enjoy this as a slow sipper. Great stuff.

Bottle @ ZEBF 2015. Aroma of roasted malt and hop. Taste is surprisingly soft, with grassy hop and roasted malt and coffee. Like a strong dark saison. Nice.
