A really awesome beer. Great sipper. Pours complete thick black lots of bubbly mocha head. Aromas of funk, white wine, citrus zest. Nice tangy fun followed by dark toasted grains. Such a well crafted beer. dreamflower (790) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - NOV 19, 2015
UPDATED: JAN 10, 2016 Jan 2016 comments. The last time I reviewed this I was sick so it affected my palate. This really is a beautiful and tasty beer. I adjusted my scores. Nov 2015 comments. Bottle shared with northropfrye. He trumped this one up quite a bit but it’s not to my liking. Too bitter and I get a metallic quality. I have a hard time choking this down. northropfrye (3514) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - NOV 19, 2015
Dark black body, brown bubbly, frothy head, some lacing. Aroma of hops, yeast, lactose, roast, funk, urine, rhubarb. Taste is rich, some roasty bitterness, herbal element, again tart dry rhubarb, hops, resin, cherries, chocolate, anise. Not too boozy. abv well masked. As I kept drinking this I had to go back and up the taste score even more. Often the aroma on a beer outweighs the taste, but on this one it’s the opposite. Really quite fantastic. Black coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, charcoal and some licorice coming though. Fair bit of complexity to this one. weihenweizen (3751) - Charleston Area, West Virginia, USA - NOV 8, 2015
Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a glass. Black with huge light brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, medium body, medium carbonation, and thick Big-bubble lacing. Taste is big rich dark chocolate and some herbal hops with dry finish. Imperial saison or strong Belgian ale not really, imperial porter more like, good beer. budedou (963) - Saint Etienne, FRANCE - OCT 29, 2015
Pour is black with lots of dark tan head and leaves a ton of lacing. Nose has a fair bit of roasted malt, moderate green olive note, mild dark fruit sweetness, faint peppery spice. Flavor follows suit, assertive olive, lighter roasty malt, subtle dark fruits and a peppery spice that hasn’t been in some of the other stouts. Very dry finish, assertive carb, medium body, fairly smooth. Gluepot (632) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 23, 2015
A big departure from past Isseki Nicho editions. The nose is of dank hops, yeast and sweet malt. It has a dense dark brown colour topped by a frothy, thick tan head. Whereas past versions verged on imperial stout status, the 2015 edition is a bit of a mixture of less compelling elements in my view. Roasted malt, dank hops, Belgian yeast and some sour cherries and berries are featured in this version. A far cry from the crisp, clean, creamy chocolate and coffee "near stout" of bygone days. Why use the same name?
