Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Koffie, (gebrande) mout, beetje laurier, drop, blauwe bes. Goeie bitter in de afdronk. Prima black ipa.

Bottle from Firefly. Nose of chocolate, licorice, wood, roast, oranges. Very roasty, woody, coffee, chocolate, pine. Much more burnt than I like, but still well done. That hoppy citrus in the background is very nice.

29/VII/17 - 341ml bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ holidays - BB: n/a, bottled: 2017/I/12 (2017-1153)

Clear dark brown beer, solid creamy beige head, very stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet malts, caramel, some tropical fruits, citrus. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of citrus, pretty bitter, grassy, soft roast, lots of tropical fruits, some grapefruit. Aftertaste: very bitter hops, very roasted, some cold coffee, charcoal even, dry bitter finish.

UPDATED: NOV 25, 2017 341 ml. 341 ml. Not quite black because some reflections. Beige foam of good behavior leaving many laces on the glass. Beautiful nose of chocolate, leather, dried fruits, spices, herbs and roasting. Large carbonation and mouth effervescent, malted, vegetable, many spices, resin, bitterness with final dry. Original and tasty with hops superbly put forth.

drpimento (3866) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 5, 2017
It’s very good beer but there is little sign of hop flavor except for perhaps bitterness.

Gerbeer (4213) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 23, 2017
341 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with full head. Aromas of piney chocolate and light roasted malts. Flavors of same with an oily hoppiness.

Gluepot (780) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - APR 15, 2017
A full, well laced light tan head on a chocolate brown body. The nose features grassy hops, roasted malt and a touch of chocolate. A very nicely balanced take on the black IPA. Prominent citrus and grassy hops with edgy roasted malt. Not to sweet but with solid caramel hints. Solid coffee and hops in the finish. Medium mouth feel and density with appropriate carbonation.

Poobah (485) - New Orleans, Louisiana, USA - APR 12, 2017
Reddish-brown and plum colored with a thin head and an espresso, caramel nose. Medium carbonation with a light, syrupy, sticky mouthfeel. Finishes dry with espresso, caramel, and dark chocolate.

Adamsville (427) - Quebec, CANADA - MAR 6, 2017
Sensation : Corps moyen à mince, carbonatation moyenne, longue finale.
