Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Tap. THIS is a black IPA?? Pours opaque black with a small tan head and great lacing. Aroma is cigarettes, dark roasted malts, coffee. Flavor is lightly sweet, light bitter, leading to a bitter finish. However, bitterness with no accompanying flavors from hop alphas. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. I was prepared to like this as a porter. As a black IPA, MEH.

erickok (5924) - Leuven, BELGIUM - MAY 12, 2013
Black bodied and tan stable head. Balanced aroma with coffee, roasted malts and fresh yeast combining grassy and forest hops. Mouth filling body, light tinteling palate and medium bitterness. Malts dominate the taste, but solid bitterness, that’s not too complex. Short, drinkable aftertaste. Nice brew. (12oz bottle from Bière Cultes)

Draught at the Underground, 12oz glass. Blackish pour with deep mahogany tints. One finger of dark beige foam on top, sticky lacing. Cocoa in the aroma, lightly sweet. Taste has toasty malts, cocoa, grain, some leafy and grassy hop notes. Finish picks up on the cocoa and grassy bitterness, lingering grainy toasty malts with some roast notes. Feeling more of a hoppy porter vibe here, it is a nice brew though.

341ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown, with a brown head. Hoppy, roasted aroma, chocolate, ashes, tobacco, spruce, caramel. Dry, medium bodied, mid bitterness, creamy CO2. Roasted, spicy taste, hops, ashes, chocolate, coffee, caramel, licorice, faint smoke, spruce, herbs. Well balanced, rich and really dry. Maybe I expected a little more hops, but never mind that. Cunningham (7713) - Halden, NORWAY - APR 26, 2013

Appearance: Black color with a big frothy beige head. Good lacing.
Aroma: Dark malt, chocolate, grassy, fruity and grape hoppy.
Palate: Medium to full body. Slightly sweet, and a rich bitterness. Soft carbonation.
Taste: Really complex flavor. Roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, fruity, grassy and grape hoppy.
Overall impression: Decent BIPA. It is just that I do not fancy The Grassy notes to much.
Personal stats: Bottle from net order at Systembolaget, Sweden.
