Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Dark brown, almost black with a small tan head. Aroma is mainly roasted malts with coffee in the front, some licorice, ash and pine as well, Taste is medium bitter with a dry bitter finish leaving a dark chocolate taste lingering. Overall good but being an IPA I would like some more hops, more of a bitter stout now.

Bottle. Almost opaque black liquid with medium light tan head. Aroma of licorice, pumpernickel, ash, grass, pine, citrus and mango. Taste is dry and medium to high bitter with notes of licorice, coffee, pine and citrus. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Aroma isn’t hoppy enough for my taste but the taste is excellent.

Bottle, bottled on 12/2012. Pours black with a stylish, latte-colored head that leaves a very nice lacing. Very classy. Aroma is roast, some coffee, a hint of chocolate. Taste is a lot of roast, some coffee, light touch of flower. Where are the hops? Palate is medium with a lot of carbonation. An alright porter, not much of a hop presence, except perhaps for the fact that it’s quite dry. Not much bitterness or hop flavors. Disappointing.

Bottle (345 ml) from Systembolaget. Drak reddish brown, thin and fluffy beige head. Salty roasted malt aroma, some ash tray notes, some faint hops. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Dry with medium to high bitterness. A very dry and bitter (and pretty dull) porter.

A rough one in the gap between an IPA and a dry Porter. Burnt aroma and taste with a drysweet light caramel tone that develops into dark and somewhat bitter coffee. Great balance.
