Backlog rating. 12oz bottle from BD Camden, London. It pours a hazy dark brown color with ruby edges and a medium sized off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts and dried fruits, toffee. Taste is quite harsh roasty and bitter with notes of coffee, earth, cocoa, tangy red berries and piny hops. Finishes resinous and bitter. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, ok BIPA Gandalf39 (153) - - NOV 30, 2014
Une bière très gourmande sur le chocolat et un peu le café. Belle amertume. Une bonne bière si l’on aime le cacao mais pas vraiment une IPA. kambei70 (1085) - - NOV 20, 2014
Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and slight char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, earth, and char flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop and roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel.

Fast schwarze Farbe, ordentliche beige Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr hopfig, reifes Obst, röstmalzig, Kaffee. Geschmack nach Kaffee, Schokolade, Vanillle, dann wird es leicht hopfig, bitter, im Nachtrunk dann wieder sehr schokoladig, Kaffee. eduardovl (1454) - SWITZERLAND - OCT 14, 2014
341ml bottle served in a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark brown to black forming a big bubbled beige head. Good retention and tons of lacings left in the glass
S: Roasted malts and flowery hops. Black IPAs are quite weird because they do have this mix of black roasted beers with pale and hoppy beers
T: Roasted and hoppy. Good balance. Roasted malts, notes of dark chocolate. Biscuity. Quite bitter which is a mix of roasted malts and hops bitterness
M: Medium body and carbonation. Roasted and hoppy bitterness aftertaste
O: Good drinkability. Great Black IPA. Another Dieu du Ciel! winner

BOTTLE. shared RW. Jet black with nice tan head. Dark choc/vanilla on the nose, with the dark choc up front and a smooth bite at the back end, more of a porter than IPA.

Steverus0 (263) - Shreveport, Louisiana, USA - SEP 28, 2014
More like a porter with extra hops (which is not to say bad).
Pours a coal black with light, toffee colored head. Roasted chocolate and caramel on the nose with just a hint of floral hops.
Heavy on the palate with your typical roasted caramels and just a hint of chocolate and toffee. Hops come through lightly but remain on the palate just a bit longer than the roasted notes.
I’d give this a higher rating if it were just a porter, but as a black IPA it wants just a bit more balance with the roasted and hoppy notes.
