Black IPA. Again, an american invention. This style was born at the "Vermont pub and brewery" around 1997. It could be said that this beer tries to be an hybrid between a regular IPA and a porter. The Pénombre presents a light body and well expressed tofferaction tastes. The whole is however dominated by an evident bitterness, which stays always in balance with the other tates found in the beer. In the after taste, the bitterness and hops flavours are growing slowly dut surely, sip after sip.

Fast schwarze Farbe, ordentliche beige Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr hopfig, reifes Obst, röstmalzig, Kaffee. Geschmack nach Kaffee, Schokolade, Vanillle, dann wird es leicht hopfig, bitter, im Nachtrunk dann wieder sehr schokoladig, Kaffee.

CBC. Almost black with a light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, heavy chocolate and moderate hoppy - citrus. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. Smooth and oily. 110512

Black color with creamy brownish head, nice lace. Nice aroma of roasted malt and quality hops; light coffee and rubber. Smooth and dry mouthfeel, strong flavor of roasted malts and burnt coffee, followed by resiny hops, with light sourness from the dark malts, ashes, and traces of yeast.

Bottle at the pre Bamberg tune up in the Sham, big thanks to James for a CDA tick, 23/01/14. Extremely dark mahogony brown with a moderate beige covering. Nose is dark malts, floral notes, bitter fruits, earthy hop tones. Taste comprises light pine, tropical fruit, faint cocoa. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying closure. Ok, a little underwhelming though for the style.

On tap at Dieu du Ciel, pours a dark brown with an amber tinge and a small tan head. Aroma of smells more like a porter or light stout, with lots of roasted malt, slight hop character in the background. Flavour more resembles a black IPA, with an excellent and equal balance of roasted malt upfront, followed by bitter citrus hops. Great textbook black IPA - highly drinkable.

Dark brown colour with bubbly head. Quite toasty and roasty, more stoutlike than most exapmles. Has nice roastiness and lots of hop. Good beer, assertive and balanced.

Tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration, 2012. Black with big beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, citrus and grapefruit. Flavour is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, medium sweet, hops, little dry, little grapefruits, little liquorice and medium bitter.

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration. It pours a very dark brown body and a dense, finger-thick dark beige head. The aroma is mostly on the roasted side, some licorice blends in, and also a light hoppyness. Roasted flavor with some licorice, a touch of caramel sauce and some bitterness. Full-bodied, dry and pleasantly carbonated with roasted malts and some bitterness in the finish. It’s a really nice one, but far from being a Black IPA or whatever you choose to call it. I’d say stout instead. And one more please. 120511

Pours dark brown in color with a tall tan head. Rather roasted malt and chocolate forward aroma. Lots of coffee, earthy and floral hops, mild citrus, and sweet toffee. There’s a decent bitterness to the flavor along with plenty of floral, earthy, and citrus hops. Big roasted malt and chocolate flavors, pretty heavy on the coffee as well.
